View Full Version : No guide data via network

I'm tearing my hair out here, my guide data is running out, my TiVo is connected to my network and has been receiving guide data flawlessly for ages, but not any more. In fact, not since June 8th.

A test call on the TiVo fails and TiVoweb reports "wrong number" (?!)

I ran 'nic_config_tivo' and it reported the IP gateway as 'ip gateway=192.168.1.1' which looked a bit suspect and a search on this forum confirmed that this was a cachecard bug.

So, I've now updated my configuration to:

Current/New Configuration:
mac address = 00:0B:AD:69:C6:67
ip address = 10.0.1.100
ip subnet mask = 255.255.255.0
ip gateway = 10.0.1.1
debug level = off
daily call = network
cache statistics = 0 seconds

And I still can't connect!

My network consists of an Apple Airport Extreme Basestation (AEB) connected to a Virgin broadband cable modem and the AEB is connected to the TiVo by ethernet cable. The AEB tells me that it's IP is 10.0.1.1 and it serves DHCP to 10.0.1.2-99.

Have I chosen the correct address for the IP gateway, if not, where do I look? Please, any advice?

Thanks, Graham

Have I chosen the correct address for the IP gateway, if not, where do I look? Please, any advice? Well that depends on your network setup!

According to what you have written above "The AEB tells me that it's IP is 10.0.1.1 and it serves DHCP to 10.0.1.2-99. ", then yes, what you have as the gateway on the Tivo sounds correct.

If this USED to work, and then stopped working without you changing anything, then it sounds like the config for your network has got confused on the Tivo somehow. So I would suggest resetitng it just to make suer everything is OK

1: Go to nic_config_tivo, and change the setting from network to dialup. ALTHOUGH IT WILL NOT TELL YOU THIS, THIS WILL OVERRIDE THE GATEWAY TO 160.100.1.1.

2) Save the settings, then Reboot the Tivo (not sure if you need this step, but it cannot hurt)

3) Go to nic_config_tivo, and change the gateway back to 10.0.1.1, and change the setting from dialup to network

4) Save the settings, then Reboot the Tivo (not sure if you need this step, but it cannot hurt)

5) Try a test call, and see if it now connects.

If it still fails, we can then have a look in the log files after it has done a daily call to see what it thinks is happening

Oh, and while I remember!

Have you changed what programs run at boot up e.g. in rc.sysinit.author?

Could you post the contents of that file? I think (IIRC) that it is in /etc/rc.d.

Although if you are using Sanderton's Startup Editor, then you will want the rc.sysinit.author.edit file in /var/hack instead

Thanks for the suggestions, but no luck - the test call failed.

I've now tried to telnet 10.0.1.100 and can't connect, and Tivoweb can't either. I've must have screwed up something somewhere - however I think I'll wait until the morning to take a fresh look at the problem! Thanks for your help anyway.

OK, so what I did was set the debug level of the cachecard to "test" in the assumption that it would generate a nice detailed log file that I could post here. How wrong I was! What I've subsequently found out, after searching these forums, is that this disables the ethernet connection and I've not been able to find a solution to re-enable the connection.

So, can anyone tell me how to reset the cachecard back to it's default settings so that I can at least connect to the TiVo again?

Thanks, Graham.

I do not know another way apart from taking the drive out of the Tivo, put it in a PC, and follow the normal install route for the Cachecard drivers...:(

Having done EXACTLY the same thing a couple of months ago I'm afraid you are going to have to pull the drive.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm in a Mac-only household, so it's taken a few calls to find a friend willing to let me open up their PC! I'll be paying them a visit tomorrow with TiVo HD, boot CD and instructions in hand, so hopefully will be back to trying to fix my original problem very soon!

What ever you do follow the instructions to the letter - I tried to be clever and not put the Tivo HDD in the location specified and despite changing the drive letters accordingly it wouldn't recognize the drive. See my stupidity here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=421984)
