Hi everyone, I just got a Series 2 TiVo and I was wondering if there was a free alternative program to transfer my dvd rips on my PC to my TiVo? I'm aware of Tivo Desktop 2.7, but I don't really want to shell out $25 for the plus key if there was a free alternative. Thanks!

Note that DVDs are MPEG-2, so you can serve them with the non-Plus version of TiVo Desktop if you do a straight rip (not rip + encode).

dvdshrink reauthor, select the biggest title, disable splitting on 1GB chunks, and backup to a folder. You'll get a handful of files, the biggest one of which you rename to a .mpg file, then move it into your TiVo folder and move it with TiVo Desktop.
If you want to carry over the subtitles, I believe there's a way to do it but I've never tried.
You should also do a custom shrink percentage to whatever minimal quality you can accept. Transfer speeds to your Tivo will be slow, so the smaller the file the better.
