I recently purchased a Tivo HD with the fathers day special and read that Tivos originally ship with old outdated firmware that causes the Tivo to be very sluggish.

After reading the Faq here these issues appear to have been resolved in a firmware update. I am having trouble convincing someone over at slickdeals on this thread: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?p=20439507#post20439507 (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?p=20439507#post20439507)

Can someone either post a message here that includes a source OTHER than tivocommunity.com(they specifically said tivocommunity are a bunch of fanboys and seem to say alot of positive things that may not be true). Or alternatively post a source here and I can post it over there.

Not sure why you would care what someone else on another forum thinks about your issue but AFAIK there is no "official source" on the TiVo web site with a statement such as you're looking for.

It's pretty simple really. As with any computer, TiVo's ship with whatever software (not firmware - big difference...TiVo firmware is never updated ) version that was available when it was manufactured. Once it is activated the software is updated to the latest version within 24 to 48 hours.

Bottom line is that the question of sluggishness has nothing to do with the software version. When TiVo's are activated and initially connect to the servers the first priority is to download one day of guide data so the unit becomes useable almost immediately. Subsequently it will download the rest of the guide data and finally the software update. All of this takes place over a period of three to four days.

Brand new TiVo's are somewhat slower initially because they are indexing (organizing) all of the incoming guide data including a couple of week's worth of the thousands of programs available on all of the channels that you can receive. All of this activity is transparent; taking place in the background. So menus, searches, etc. won't be as snappy as they will be in a few days.

Being a "fanboy" of TiVo has nothing to do with the facts that have existed for the ten years or so that TiVo has been around. Perhaps you need to find new friends over there? You'll always be welcome here. ;)

Give them this link (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=11126048&postcount=2). Tell them to see Using TiVo FAQ #72 and/or Pre-Purchase FAQ #62.

Why do you care if posters on SD are posting bad information? Let readers on SD decide if they want to believe posts on SD or posts on TCF.

It's not just the software upgrade. The first 24 hours or so tivo is loading and indexing guide data. Force at least 3 phone calls, until it note pending software upgrade then reboot. Let tivo work overnight.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I must admit that this post's main purpose was to legitimize my own hopes. I was worried for a moment that the poster on SD was correct so I came here for personal validation :o
