Hi all - havent posted for a while (you never tend to if old faithfull is working properly). Anyway last night one of the discs in mine went 2x400's. Now if the one that has gone is the second one in the set - is there a way i can disconnect it from the first. Im pretty sure the first one isnt full. But if i can it'll save me a shed load of time and all my recordings....

Thanks to anyone that can shed some light on this....

I don't think you'll be able to divorce one disk and keep using the other without reimaging and losing everything.

AIUI the MFS file system spreads bits of recordings across all available disk space. It's not like Windows which notionally 'puts' a file on a disk. I'm fairly sure that if 1 of 2 fails then all recordings are lost.

You could try a running a diagnostic (powermax etc.) on the disks in a PC and see which is still viable or if the failing one can be resurrected long enough to back up your settings and recordings.

Sorry its not better news, perhaps someone else will have more options for you?

No, you're right AMc. It is sometimes possible to create a divorced backup by copying everything onto a single, larger, disk. But of one of the pair is fried, you're screwed.

Its ok lads, i just found the problem, ive got it in pieces at work hooked up to a monitor. Its the memory on the cachecard. The screen was going black on boot but i left it to get on with some work and then it appeared saying it couldnt read the 512meg simm. Just reseated it and it works fine now. Hey, while we're here and while im on - ive got some other questions....

1. Theres only a few forum threads in this area....there used to be loads....i hope your're not winding this up. I dont come here that often but when i do its a godsent usually as i get great help.
2. ages and ages ago i had some software that i used for extracting video which i only ever got to work once...is this still a no no on discussing as id love to get it working again....which leads to....
3. ive always found the 100meg connection to be akin to 10 meg in terms of transfer speed - is that the norm or is there a way of speeding it up....

1. it is quiter than it used to be... I think people now have other freeview, freesat PVRs, or Sky+/HD. (I have Freesat HDR as my main PVR now)
2. still a no no here.
3. 10Meg is about the max you'll get out of TiVo.

Fewer people with living TiVos, most are already upgraded, most questions that could be asked have been and the answers are in the archive!

People seem less bothered these days, but extraction talk is still banned. The software has been much improved by all accounts.

You can tweak it higher than 10, but you'll never get anything like 100. My record was about 30. Tweaking it tends to have a knock on effect on the usability of the TiVo while it's transferring though

ok to number 1. then - thats fair enough but i was looking at the bloke thats importing the Aus Tivo - hope that comes off - if it does ill take it on the chin on the credit card for one of those...

2. Can you point me in the right direction with regards to the newer software.

3. How can i tune it then - i dont mind the slow down as i very rarely transfer anything from it - well, not at the moment as i dont have any extraction software. Without going into it - years ago when i did have it working the extractions were probably the best grabs ive seen from any bit of standard def equipment, period.

Finally thanks very much for youre help - you may not hear it that often but its nice when people do reply....thanks again!

oh sorry - one more thing....i tend to use my tivo with pretty well nothing installed on it.ive got the cachecard on there, with the memory, i did have the tivo web thingy on there - it was handy for turning the channel over when i am moving round the house (tivo goes round the RF system in the house)...

I did notice that most of the hacks and stuff tail off from tivo web and, ooh - whats the latest version as ive seen loads of versions of it but some you cant run on the old uk ones....

1 There was a change to the default viewing options on this forum a while back, scroll down and choose "From The Last two weeks" and it looks a bit busier. It is quieter now. I still love Tivo but I'm researching a Windows Media Centre solution for multiple tuners and Hi Def.

2 me too!

3 IIRC set the Tivo input to a channel which you don't get (no video input) and then put it into standby. Still doesn't move faster than a snail on slow day though. The no video input might cause a reboot after a couple of hours, not sure.

hmm - media center - ive got one but just use it for the dvd libary - our tivo is hanging off of the back of a sky digibox. I might sound like a bit of a die hard but ive seen a lot of epg's and a lot of pvr's over the years but nothing but nothing works like a tivo. One of the things that i was looking at was putting a pci card and a satelite cam (Diablo) into a media center box and then transferring the digi'box'es serial over to it to enable the card to work in the pc and therefor work in mediacenter....its a bit pie in the sky but it was just a theory....

and also if you are going to use media center use the windows 7 version as its way better than Vista....

There are a lot of config tweaks, but basically you boost the priority which the extraction software has so it takes over more CPU cycles.

I can't remember the details; if you go to deal database and search for setpri you should turn up some stuff.
