eBuyer are selling a 5400RPM Samsung F2 "EcoGreen" Drive for £60. It is supposed to run even cooler and with lower power consumption than the usual WD suspects.

Anyone tried one of these in a Series 1 TiVo?

Funnily enough I have one of the 500gb variants of that drive on test at the moment - it seems quite nice. Not sure yet if I prefer it to the equivalent WD green power drive, but it is a bit cheaper which always helps! ;)

I have a Samsung Eco 5400rpm SATA 1TB drive in my Tivo-this seems to run even cooler than the WD Green drives (tested in a pc). Only reservation is that you don't always get sound after a hard start, ok after a soft restart. (known problem with Seagate drives). Mine is on a UPS but would be a problem otherwise with duff recordings after a power out.

Only reservation is that you don't always get sound after a hard start, ok after a soft restart. (known problem with Seagate drives). It's not an unusual problem with most large drives and I've seen it with pretty much everything.... but I don't recall seeing it with WD Green Power drives so maybe they are more considerate in their startup phase.

Neverthess, the Samsung 5400rpm "Eco" drives do seem to be very well suited to TiVo use and definitely run cooler than the equivalent sized WD Green Power ones so I have some on order

Hello,
If I were to buy one of these drives, how would I get the UK tivo software onto it? Is it an easy job? Thanks in advance.

I use Mikerr's "no sound fix" which works really well. My Tivo is also on UPS but I've had to pull the power a few times recently. I have forgotten it was there and been puzzled and upset by Tivo rebooting itself straight after a cold start but it certainly works.

Hello,
If I were to buy one of these drives, how would I get the UK tivo software onto it? Is it an easy job? Thanks in advance. If you have a suitable PC (two IDE ports, minimum) you can DIY from scratch, using the Hinsdale guide or one of the more recent how-to guides. You can also DIY the easy way using Hooch or you can buy a preconfigured drive.

Clearly the from scratch DIY is the cheapest option and a preconfigured drive is the most expensive. It all depends on how much spare time and enthusiasm you have :)
