New Tivo wont make daily call

Hi,

I'm trying to get a friend's Tivo working but am having problems getting it to make the daily call.

It's connected to the TV and the phone line with the same cables as on my - fully working - Tivo. However, it hangs when I get to the point in guided set-up when it wants to call home to get the schedule. I've compared the phone set-up and all seems exactly the same as my own.

I'm afraid I've unplugged the thing now so can't remember the exact error message but step 1 of the call never gets beyond Connecting.

Any ideas?

What phone provider does your friend use? There have been problems with Talk Talk & Tiscali lines not supporting analogue modems anymore. If it's one of these providers do a search here - some people have managed to get it going by changing settings.

I'm using it at my house, with my Virgin Media connection that works fine with my Tivo.

All I've done is swapped boxes, and am using what seems like the exact same set-up. Clearly something is different tho

Does it have a network card fitted?

It does, though I recall seeing an error message when the machine started up, though I can't remember what that message was right now.

Then it is probably trying to make the set up call over the network.

The best thing to do is to set up the network connection properly so it gets the initial call over the 'net at high speed (it's big) and is set up to do the daily call that way too.

You could also remove the case and unplug the network card, Tivo will then revert to using the phoneline. That will allow you to complete the initial set up before delving into setting up the network connection.

Ah I see. Is there any easy How To guide for connecting the Tivo to the network and configuring everything okay?
