View Full Version : Series 2 connects to wireless network, but Series 2 DT won't? What gives?

Sorry if this topic has been discussed here before, but I searched, and couldn't find anything relating to my specific problem...

I hooked up the Wireless G adapter to my old Series 2, no problem. It found the wireless network, asked for the password, and bam, everything connected fine.

That was yesterday.

I bought a new Series 2 DT, and plugged the same Wireless G adapter in before powering up, and running through the initial guided setup. For some reason, the DT won't find the network. I keep getting the error message "The gateway ( router) could not be located (N07)"

or

It takes me through the setup, it finds the network no problem, I enter the password, it asks if I want Tivo to obtain an IP address automatically, it asks if I need to use a DHCP client ID, I hit No or Nor Sure, then I get the error message "A DHCP server could not be located on the network (N02)"

I'm guessing this is a software problem, since I never had a problem, with my old Series 2, and this one is straight out of the box, so maybe the software isn't up to date.

It's very frustrating that I have this new toy, and can't even play with it yet! Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance!

Are you using WPA encryption on your network? Series 2 DTs typically ship with an older version of the software that does not support WPA. If that is your situation, you can connect your Tivo with an Ethernet cable to get the update, or temporarily turn off network encryption until you get the latest software.

Okay, I figured out it's the WPA encryption that's causing the problem ( Thanks pdonoghu ), so I just need to update the Tivo software from 7.5 to the current version.

I've plugged the ethernet cable into the back of the unit, and was able to perform most of the setup, but the software version isn't being updated. Can I force the unit to connect to the Tivo network and perform the update?

The router is located in my Step-son's bedroom, and that place is scary, man! I don't want poor Tivo lingering in there any longer that absolutely nesseccary!

Yes, you can try force connecting it. Be prepared for more than one (read several) connection tries. Find someone interesting to do in your step-son's room. You will be there a while. :)

EDIT: I was in the same situation couple of years ago and the new Tivo did not get the new software for next 2 days. I hope things have changed since that time.

You could also try taking off WPA for a day or two (until this is resolved)......unless you want your network really secure (....ahem....) at all times.

Once you get the update, the Tivo has to reboot to load the update. It will do this automatically at 2:00 AM, if you are not recording something at that time. You can confirm you have an update to be installed by looking at the network and phone line scree, if the status is "Pending restart" you have an update waiting. If you don't want to wait until 2:00 AM, you can restart the Tivo.
