View Full Version : Can't make the daily call over network

I currently run two tivos both upgraded and with cachecards. Recently on one of them the hard disks began to play up, so I decided to buy a preconfigured 500Gb hard disk to replace the pair of disks that was in that tivo. As I no longer have a suitable computer on which to do any upgrades I asked that the disk came with the cache card drivers already intalled and setup for the right ip address. I installed the disk and it won't make its daily call over the network.
I searched this forum and consequently using telnet ran the nic_config_tivo command and discovered that the gateway was wrong and it wasn't set to call over the network. So I changed these settings and rebooted, however it still won't make the call, it comes back as Failed. Number Unavailable. If I get the tivo to ping another computer on the home network it will get a response but if I get it to ping somewhere beyond the gateway it comes back as unavailable. Just to confirm there has been no changes to the gateway and the tivo with the new hard disk has the same network settings as it used to before the hard disk broke (except possibly a different MAC address)

This obviously implies that the tivo cannot get through the getway, but I don't see what the problem could be. Neither of my tivos have any special rules or conditions setup in the gateway to allow them to access the outside and the tivo that I haven't changed the disk in is still working as normal. Is it possible that the tivo is still looking for the gateway in the wrong place even though the config file tells me that it isn't? Has anybody got any suggestions?

On a side note that may or may not be related there appears to be no sound as you negotiate through the guided start up screens I am assuming that this is the standard voltage issue and once I have got the tivo to dial up I will look at tweaking the voltage or buying a new power supply if it is still a problem. Just thought I would mention it in case it is related.

Any advice would be useful.

Hi There,

Two possibilities immediately spring to mind:

1. The MAC address for the CacheCard is software configurable, and I believe as default they are all the same. So, the new drive/drivers may have reset your MAC so that it is the same as the other TiVo. This would be likely to cause problems.

2. NIC_Install often resets settings to the default unless you explicitly set them. So, although it is a pain, run nic_install again and specifically set each parameter, even if it looks ok!

Hope this helps.
