The new show from Mike Judge was pretty funny I thought, even though a LOT of the jokes were of the way-too-obvious variety. I liked the characters though (well, it was just the KOTH family with different ages and setting, right? :)) and I think if they can just expand the environment a little more this can be a pretty good show.

I tried this out, didn't make it all the way through, heck didn't even make it 15 minutes in.
If it has legs I'll try it again later.

I did laugh at a number of the jokes, but I just wasn't left wanting more...

It was just "okay" for me. I liked it well enough to get a SP, so it made it past the first hurdle, but I'm still reserving judgment on this one.

That's about where I am on this. I thought it started out really slow, and not funny, but I thought it got a bit better as it went along. I'll give it another week or two before I decide whether to keep or not.

I thought it was so-so. I kept thinking the father looked about 20 years old though and kept having to remind myself he was supposed to be in his 30's. I didn't like their adopted son.

I didn't like their adopted son.Same here on both accounts. Also, the elder father is pretty much just a taller version of Hank Hill's father - exact same role in the show.
Overall, not as funny as I'd hoped. I'll give it another viewing or two.

The one part I liked (because I've always said this) is that they called their son African-American. I always wondered....if I was from Egyptian parents, wouldn't that make me African-American? And like in the show, a white person who's parents were born in S. Africa...same thing. It's why I never liked that term. Technically, according to most theories ALL of our roots are from Africa, isn't that right?

I don't like the adopted kid character much either. He just reminds me of "Moose" on the old Archie Cartoons. Just a big dummy. Not very original. I recognized Hank Hills Father in that elder dad character too. :p

I loved the convention part at the end. It was esp funny to me because I am in Memphis and COGIC (sp) just decided to leave Memphis for ST Louis.

The dad really reminded me of Mr. Van Driessen from Beavis & Butthead, same voice, same outlook on life, just like Hank Hill reminds me of Tom Anderson from Beavis & Butthead, just recycled characters with better animation.

You're talking about the theory of "relativity", right?
I wouldn't agree about the "most theories" part. That would include music theory, big bang theory, probability theory, chaos theory, etc. etc. :D

no sp for this one
Very strange, and very one-note. I don't see how they're going to sustain a series based on this narrow concept.

Oh, yes...we had several families in our small private school growing up who were from South Africa (white Jewish families who were discriminated against for their religion) and referred to themselves as African-Americans. It was 100% true! And this was before the term was widely used. We thought it was interesting-but like I said, 100% true.
I love Mike Judge and just about anything he does-and I could close my eyes and slow down the dad's voice and hear Hank Hill, and of course this is like Beavis & Butthead's teacher+20 years, like others have said, but some of the skewering of PC stuff is dead-on.
*Paper or plastic? NEITHER! Those reusable bags are made in sweatshops! :p
*The poor vegan dog! Aww-he's warning his little squirrel friend to be careful, since there are already so many missing animals in the neighborhood!
*The bazillion types of apples-and the increasing prices as the number of adjectives describing said apples increased! :o
So there were a few laughs-and I saw the "emergency" for Umbutu to drive coming a zillion miles away, but it was cute. I will probably watch it.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that. Apparently that's Mike Judge doing the voice.. I know he also does Hank Hill, but I guess he does have a bit more variety than I thought (in that I don't automatically think Hank Hill & Van Driessen sound the same).
but the father just kept making me think of the teacher from Beavis & Butthead (van driessen, yes).

I wonder if that's going to be a recurring theme. How the dog gets some meat.
This week it was a cat. :D Probably mostly fur though. :(

Took me about five minutes to realize that these were parents and children...they all looked like 20-something friends. Generally, I didn't enjoy it. A show about fanatic environmentalists can only go so far before it just stops being funny. The jabs at Whole Foods were hilarious, though.

No, you would be Egyptian-American or SA-American not African American.
African American is in reference to their ethnicity, not their nationality.
Africa is not a country, blacks use "African" to signify Black African heritage because they don't know their heritage or which part they descend from. So, if you know which African nation you are from and you know your heritage, you would have no need to be called African American  :o.
You are correct on your last point tho....

Why do I get the feeling that the Goode Family are just an Alt-Universe Hill Family?
It follows the same formula as KoTH, except for the addition of a daugher, the dad even has the same expressions and belief that his work is all important. The mother is self centered like Peggy Hill.
IMHO, KoTH ended because 10 years was more than enough for that formula, so why repeat it in a different setting?

Because Mike Judge apparently can't let sleeping dogs lie.

I thought this was great. Yes, it was a bit KOTH-ish, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Very good for a pilot. I hope ABC lets this thing gain an audience.

I'll comment on all 3 eps that have aired, as I just watched them last night.
I agree that the pilot was just so-so, but the 3rd ep was a riot! That cat Gutterball was THE funniest thing I have seen in a long, long time.
I'm not a huge fan of animation, but I already love this show. Just don't send Gutterball to live with me, that thing was hideous!

I watched the two episodes that aired this week (Gutterball and the football one). I didn't laugh once. After five minutes I thought that it sucked, but I held on thinking that maybe it just took time to adjust to (I liked King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead, and most of the other Mike Judge stuff I've seen, so it's not as if I don't get his humor). After the hour was over, I still thought it sucked. I think the unimaginative voicing of the characters is a big part of why it sucks but there just wasn't anything funny happening anyway.

I'm not trying to convince you, but at least for me, I don't think I laughed out loud at King of the Hill very much, and it's a show I really liked. That is, it was enjoyable for me to watch, but not laugh out loud funny.

I not only didn't laugh out loud, I didn't laugh to myself nor did I even once think, "That was funny". It had fewer good jokes than Schindler's List.

I enjoyed the pilot, but I haven't watched the other two episodes yet. Based on responses in this thread, I'm guessing I will like them. This seems to be a love it or hate it type of show. It makes fun of political correctness, hybrids, vegans, greenness, and many things pulling the current liberal bandwagon, but also conservative topics like abstinence only education, flag waving, etc. Like South Park, it makes fun of extremists of all creeds.
The apples at the Whole Paycheck (err, Whole Foods) knock-off, the "surprised to see a poor person at Whole Paycheck", the $10 re-usable grocery sacks, the hybrid drag-race, the vegan dog eating all the neighborhood animals, drunk mom, the father-daughter church dance, the "I'm gonna Michael Moore them" amateur poser filmmaker, etc, were all great.
Maybe it will get repetitive as I watch the next two eps I've got recorded, but I tend to give summer shows a bit more leniency as there isn't much new content available.

That's a very good point. I don't remember laughing out loud very much at King of the Hill either, but I enjoyed that show a lot because of the characters.
I enjoyed the second and third episodes of this show more than the first. I'm not in love with it, but I'll watch it for the next couple of weeks, when it will most likely be cancelled.
Hmmm, if this show goes off, it'll be the first time there isn't a Mike Judge show running on TV since 1993.
BTW, one of few lines I remember laughing at loud at on KOTH:
"Why am I wearing the hat?"
No clue why, but I thought it was hilarious.

It must be that I'm just a right-wing wackjob :p but I loved this show.
I can see all the PC people hating it, as it makes fun of every one of the PC-type things.
I've only watched the first episode, last nights on my NP list, but I just loved the dog who they are staving because of not giving it meat.
Watching the wife try and label their neighbor was great also.

I really enjoyed it, it just shows the silliness that goes uncriticized. The green movement is becoming unraveled, because of the economy, its false intentions and sustainability.

What really cracks me up is that they have Prius commercials during a show which mocks Hybrids and those who drive them....:p:D

Actually, it's becoming "unraveled" because it's being integrated into the mainstream. Kind of like "gay culture". :)
