I am planning to catch up with Dexter this summer. I liked the show when CBS had it (cut to shreds I'm sure), and I thought I would catch up on the first 2 seasons on DVD (via Netflix). My question is, I noticed on Showtime on Demand on D* that there were only 6 episodes (numbers 301-306) and that Episode 6 was the season finale. So, is that all there is, 6 episodes?

No, there have been 12 episodes in each of the 3 seasons.

hmmmmm, curious. I wonder why it's like that on D*. I'll have to take a look and see if they posted the last 6 episodes

Comcast OnDemand will often not post the entire season of a series at once, D* might work the same way. Keep checking and I bet the rest will come up.

It looks like Dexter's going to have his hands full in Season Three.

John Lithgow will be playing the newest serial killer in Miami, a character named Walter Simmons who has evaded the FBI for over three decades. He's known as the Trinity Killer because his pattern is to kill in threes.
If you've only seen Lithgow's comedy work this seems like a strange bit of casting, but if you're as big a fan of De Palma's BLOW OUT as I am you know how ****ing awesome it is to see Lithgow embrace the darkness again. You've also got RAISING CAIN and, bear with me, SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE. I know that one isn't really supposed to be a horror movie, but his cackling greedy Toy Company exec in that movie scared the bejesus out of me as a kid. Who puts broken glass in a doll if not someone terribly unstable?
What do you guys think of this addition to the series? I'm over the moon, personally. The Showtime original series premieres on September 27th.

Is there any way to tell how long the episodes are? If they're listed as episode numbers 301 through 306, and 306 is showing that it's the season finale, perhaps D* has packaged them together as two episodes each.

Here is the IMDB episode guide for Dexter (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0773262/episodes#season-3). It describes all 12 episodes of Season 3. Each episode was about 50 minutes in running time (not including commercials). I'd say that Comcast simply has a typo their info.

...and by season 3, do you mean season 4? ...or is it a joke?
Personally, I think that would rock.

Well, Season 3 dropped from 12 episodes to 6 earlier today. Maybe by now it's vanished altogether, and what would have been Season 4 is now going to be the new Season 3! :D

Does that mean I have to watch it in Diapers? Because I was doing that anyway.

It looks like each episode is about 52 minutes long. That was what I was hoping, but alas, that's not the case. I still have to get through S1 and S2, so it is possible that by the time I get to S3, they will be available on DVD :)

I agree, Raising Cain is one of my favorite movies

Regarding that spoiler: I wonder how that's going to work. In past seasons, we haven't met the target killer until quite a ways into the season, or at least we didn't know that it was the killer. With this announcement, they've basically taken away any of that suspense. I hope they can find enough suspense elsewhere to keep it fresh and interesting.

Well, there's two possible sources of suspense that could be pretty intense if played correctly. The suspense coming from us knowing, but Dexter not knowing; and the suspense of a cat-and-mouse game between Dexter and the Big Bad (although they pretty much did that one last season).

Well, that could also be the "spoiler".
Spoiler about season 3 below
Kind of like how Jimmy Smitts character ended up being bad.
