My TiVo series 3 is less than a year old and having troubles. It is acting like Vista with a bunch of spy-ware. It is slow to response, eventually freezes the screen then restarts. All cables are secure but I'm at a loss. Is it perhaps that with the new plethora of HD channels, the series 3 can't buffer that much? Really that was a shot in the dark though.

Could be IR interference from another remote in the room. Maybe you need to go on a "Wild Remote Hunt" and see if there some lost remote, like under a sofa cushion that gets pressed by an occupant sending out IR signal that interfere with the TiVo. TIVo is picky about IR signals from Wild Remotes.

I have 2 Series 3 Tivo's... one of them is working just fine the other does exactly as you described... slows down, fails to respond to the remote and eventually reboots.

I've isoloate my problem to the 2nd "M" CC. Ever since I pulled the 2nd card, my Tivo has worked perfectly. When I called Tivo Tech Support, they told me the problem was with the card. Well... after exchanging 3 cards, I believe the problem lies with the Tivo OS as this problem never happened until recently (past few months). I suspect a bug in the Tivo but not having much luck conviencing Tivo.

My first thought was that the OP's S3 was suffering from a hard Drive problem.

Sounds like a hard drive to me.

If you remove the second CableCard in a Series3, and then reboot, your old TiVo Series3 operates in single tuner mode, reducing the load on the hard drive and minimizing the effect of errors on a failing drive.

In both of your cases, I would look into a drive upgrade / replacement. See the instructions in Section V of the Drive Upgrade FAQ (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=5616160#post5616160). It will cost you $100-$120 total to replace your failing drive with a new 1TB model (157 HD hours).

How can we run a test to see if the HD is in fact getting errors or failing?

Follow the instructions in this post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=5643823#post5643823), starting with "Kickstart 57."

Generally, your TiVo has to be in pretty bad shape to for these diagnostics screens to report errors. If your TiVo drive has only just begun to develop bad sectors, it is possible for those errors not to show up on these tests.

Report back on your results.
