Series 3 remotes. I need an education

I need a brief history lesson on the original Series 3 (not Tivo HD) . Did they all come standard with the backlit type remote, or did some come with the more conventional version that resembles the standard peanut remote.

Every article I have found seems to indicate that the more premium remote was the standard for the Series 3.

the S3 came with the black and silver backlit remote as the standard from the first release.
