View Full Version : The Dark Side.

I went over to the dark side today. I guess the HR23-700 is OK. For me it's not as intuitive as my Tivos, I guess I can chalk that up to a learning curve. Was frustrated for an hour, kept trying to flip to the other tuner, Oh well. If that's the worst I guess i can live with it.
The On Demand stuff is kind of crappy, 90% of is is from pay channels I don't get, so not much there. I like having the component outs active along with the HDMI so I can feed my bedroom tv with it. Haven't tried the Photo and Music option yet. I've noticed some lags when i skip, the audio does not match the video for an instant, and some pixelation even though all my signal levels are in the high 90s, might be a problem with the channel itself.
I guess I'll learn to live with it, pickuped up a HR20-700 on ebay to replace one of my other receivers I'll be curious to see how the networking works out with the two.

Both DLB and MRV are testing in the current Cutting Edge (CE) beta cycle. Details here if you want to help test: http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=118
Basically it's coming soon and probably should be available national wide in a couple months, depending on how well testing goes.

I checked, it's owned, and I can activate it.

Glad you did your homework.
I'm sure you are also aware that the DirecTV system sometimes "forgets" that receivers are owned and are not subject to contract extensions, etc. Making sure everything is perfectly clear up front when you activate can save headaches later. ;)

I tried your link and both forums are labeled private and won't allow me access. I have been registered with DBSTalk for years and have access to the regular fourms.

The standard place for discussion of DirecTV CEs is www.dbstalk.com . The CE forums are visible only after you have registered and logged in.

As Steve points out, the CE forum requires a separate registration.

Dang, I forgot about the registration part for the CE forums. Anyway, registration is free so take a look.
And the specific DBSTalk forum is.

With all of the changes that are happening with the HR2x platform, I'm wondering how well the upcoming HD TiVo will go over. :)

Hard to say. A lot of people like and are comfortable with the TiVo interface (my wife among them.) I'm waiting to see how many current TiVo annoyances (ads) get ported over.

I think the one thing that has made the transition easier for me - someone who really loved my TiVos and swore I wouldn't switch- was that I went to a Harmony remote. I mapped the buttons to match how I set up my TiVos and other than a different onscreen look it's pretty much functionally the same.
I did occasionally watch some of the suggestions, and from what I read I can get that in an online version but now that I explored the On Demand stuff a bit more I find that there is a wealth of stuff there, too bad it's 90% SD but I can live with that for now.
All I can say is that when the new TiVos come out they better knock my socks off, and that is coming form a staunch TiVo supporter.

I've been a registered member of DBSTalk since October 2006 (when I got my first HR20 box) and participate using the same username as here. I confirmed I was registered and logged in but it still blocked me. It did let me access the other forums and my account, etc... Oh well, no big deal. I can wait for the code to go general public, especially since my second box is not actively networked yet anyway...

The other question is will the TiVo interface on the new HDTiVo be like what everyone here is used to?

Good question. I wonder how long we'll have to wait to see.
At this point the only semi minor annoyance with the HR23 is that I don['t like the grid guide, much prefer the old Tivo style guide. It was easy to roll through all the stuff on say, HBO, and click anything I might want to see all in a matter of minutes. Using the grid guide take a lot longer.
Any tips on this one?

Yep. When you're on the grid guide, highlight HBO and press Left. The HBO channel name itself will be highlighted, then press Info. Now you will get what's on HBO only and you can skip forward and back.
Another tip. While watching any channel hit the blue button. It will put a mini guide for this channel on the bottom of the screen.

Just added the owned HR20-700 to my account and downloaded the CE software. Got MRV working without and issue. Even tried dual streaming and it worked fine over my wired network. This is something I really wanted for my H10-250 for years.
