View Full Version : Horrible Comcast signal on Tivo HD and/or Comcast nonDVR box

For a few weeks now, I've been getting some poor quality signals on my two tvs, one of which has a Tivo HD and the other has a Comcast nonDVR HD box. Two or three channels are consistently poor video and/or audio, and others come and go. Several times, the tivo will give the "searching for signal on cable in..." message with the gray background...when this happens, the comcast box will sometimes have a good signal on the same channel, a poor quality signal on the channel, or no signal at all "this channel will be available shortly...."

I have some photos of both tvs at the link below, as well as short video of the tivo tv tonight, so you can see how bad it gets. The tivo is on the (dark) samsung tv and the comcast box is on the vizio tv.

USA network is not something we watch very often, but it's shown here to display just how bad it gets. We've seen this pixelation on ABC HD, HGTV HD, TNT HD, ESPN HD, as well as several SD/digital channels.

We're in Jacksonville, FL, and nothing has changed with our setup around the time this problem started.

Thanks for any help.
Gary

Have you used the Diagnostics on your TiVo?

What kind of signal strength readings do you see when you are having the problems?

If it is only now just happening, the cable could have been damaged. I would have your cable provider come out and check it, since it is occurring with their equipment as well.

I read about the signal strength diagnostic mode after I posted, and I tried it out last night. The best I got on any channel was 52, and that was just on one channel. Everything else was around 41-45, and it seemed like 41 was the number where the pixelation occurred. I don't think I saw anything less than a 41.

If that bar does indeed go up to 100, it looks like I have a very weak signal after all. I'm going to call Comcast today to schedule an appt.

Thanks for your help.

That is WAY too low - from my personal experiences, I started experiencing pixelation when it dropped into the 60s. You maintain a level above 70. Even with over-the-air signals, I'm seeing well into the 90s on many channels. I haven't checked my cable levels lately.
