View Full Version : Series 1 Can't Handle Digital Phone Line?

Verizon recently upgraded my neighborhood to fiber optic cable, which apparently converted my inside hard-wired phone lines to digital. Ever since then, my Series 1, while dialing in, connecting, downloading and indexing all of the data, never reports that it made a successful call.

It did make a successful call because all of the new shows for the next 10 days are available to see, and all of my upcoming season pass shows for the next 10 days show that they will be recorded.

However, after 1 month of reporting that it could not make a successful call, my Tivo has disabled any of the Tivo services until it shows a successful call.

I have tried unplugging the box and modem and leaving them off for half an hour, then plugging back in and forcing a call. I tried deleting all of my preferences and history, as well as 75 percent of my recorded shows, and then forcing a call. I tried changing the channel lineup and calling, and then changing it back and calling. All with no success.

Calling Tivo technical support resulted in them offering to sell me a new box, and then telling me that, because a digital telephone line carries more information at one time than an analog line, Tivo Series 1 boxes can't handle the manner in which they got the data, and therefore never report that the call is successful. They say there is no fix for this problem.

Does anyone here have any ideas?

OK, so it looks like nobody has any ideas. FWIW, it finally connected, downloaded and recognized that it had processed the data for the first time in 2 months on Thursday. So, the TIVO functions are working again (temporarily). But now it's failing to connect again, so my service will likely be suspended again on July 4. I really don't want to buy a new TIVO now.

my Guess would be your modem is going bad. FIOS still sends an analog signal to your modem

Try downgrading the modem bandwidth. Try ,#032 or ,#096 as your dialing prefix. These will set your modem speed to 28.8 or 9600 respectively and that might overcome your connection problems.

Unless they did a really lousy job in your neighborhood, you should have BETTER modem performance. Way better. Rock solid.

Perhaps your modem is going bad. You can use an external modem, or a Turbonet card instead.
