Hi I just bought a used SIR s4040r tivo with supposedly the lifetime service plan. I get it and it says direct tv on it and I have verizon fios tv.

Is there any way tore-flash this unit to work with my verizon?

the unit works and i can view pre-recorded shows from the previouse owner, but when I try to view live tv it says its searching for info from the satellite.

TIA

Sorry, no. It doesn't have the hardware to tune anything but DirecTV.

That unit will only work with DirecTV service.
There is no way to make it work with FIOS.

Sorry.

Other than being able to watch previously recorded programs, it can also double as a poor replacement for a vehicle jackstand. :)

No to jackstand, metal to thin, can't take that much weight.

Doorstop or paperweight?

Watch the programs and then pull the 40GB drive for use in a PC.

FYI, there is no way that it has lifetime.

Thanks again everyone.Good luck. But, as magnus pointed out that unit doesn't have lifetime on it. DirecTV took over these units and converted the lifetime on the unit to lifetime on the account. So if you post it on eBay don't list it as having "lifetime".

I'm in the same boat as you. Switched to Fios and Directv gave me the 4040 dvr. I know I can't use it with Verizon but are there any other uses for it such as external hard or something? Should I toss this thing in the trash along with the dish?

There are two uses for that unit.
1) Sell it
2) Pull the hard drive and use it in a PC

There's actually a market for these DVRs? I checked Ebay and there was one listed for $45. Are there other places I should check to sell it?

Craigslist is another possibility. I'm astonished there is still that much of a market, but apparently there is.

Since they're not made anymore, if you want the TiVo experience with DirecTV, you have to buy used, or do the comparatively kludgy standalone + STB thing. You can't get HD this way, but some people don't care about that, I guess.
