I have a couple of DSR6000 units that were last used in 2004. I want to give them to my girlfriends niece. Will those units still work even though they are so old?
Or will they need the software updated and will this happen automatically?

Yes, they will still work assuming they don't have electrical problems. They will get an update if they are connected to a phone line.

OK thanks. Then the phone line is my problem since I don't have a landline any more. I need to give her either the DSR6000 boxes or one of my HR10-250 boxes. But it seems like the DSR6000 will be the least work so I'll just give her those. Plus she doesn't need component or HDMI anyway.

Thanks.

You will have to make sure that the boxes are not on your account and she may be required to get a new access card (though she may be able to talk them out of it.)

I dropped DirecTV a couple of years ago. I think I'm going to download INstantCake for the DSR6000, that way it won't need to dial in. And it will give the boxes the latest software. I'll tell her about the cards, but that will be on her. I'll have to pay the $20 for Instantcake and I'm giving her the boxes for free.
although it's been a while since I've messed around with an IDE drive. I'll need to find a couple of old ones from my pile of 20+ old ide drives that I should have sold or thrown away years ago.

I still use my DSR6000 everyday. It gets a SW update about once a year. Two years ago fixed daylight savings time. This year adjusted PPV durations or something. They call in about 1 every 10 days now, and mine does it via the network (since I added a network card).
