I've just ordered TIVO HD and trying to figure out which shows get copy protected and which shows are not. Would it be depends on channel or shows? Does shows on cartoon network have the protection on? BTW I am using Comcast in Philadelphia area.
Thanks

Mostly, it depends on channels. Generally, your local broadcast channels are always NOT protected, and premium channels often ARE protected. Everything in-between, it's a toss-up, based on the channel and based on the local cable system.

I have Comcast in South Jersey and noticed a few months ago that Showtime began using copy protections on their programming but HBO does not.

AFAIK, your local broadcast stations are not allowed to be protected, even over cable. (They DEFINITELY aren't allowed to be protected OTA.)
You can get the FCC involved, though others here have simply been enough of a squeaky wheel with their cable company to get some incorrect settings fixed for the network stations. (Others think the cable company is purposely being evil.. I think it's just someone screwing up.)

AFAIK, your local broadcast stations are not allowed to be protected, even over cable. One signal from each station is under the restriction; other signals need not be provided in-the-clear by your cable company. So what you're saying is true, if the station is only broadcasting one signal.

I contacted TWC some time ago, and they stated in their response that it is their policy to copy protect all digital channels except for the local stations. Now with the Tuning Adapter, all stations are digital, and so I chalk this up to evil.

I'm not so sure it is TWC (corporate, at least) policy, but it is their prerogative.

What does the Tivo do when it comes across a copy protected program. I am trying to troubleshoot my installation and wondering if this is the problem. Does it just show a blank screen or does it show teh cable card diagnostic screen?

CableCard issues and copy protection are two different things.
If you are not getting the channels you are supposed to be, sometimes the issue is that the host ID numbers generated by the cards in your TiVo don't match the ones that the cable company office thinks you have.
If they worked before and don't now, either the CableCard has become defective, or if it's limited to a channel or two it could be related to the quality of your cable feed.

Time Warner protects "every" channel aside from local channels, at least where I live.. Really pisses me off because I can't watch 90% of my shows on my computer which would be awesome because I spend most of my time here. If anyone knows how to bypass this please PM me (TivoHD)
They wonder why people pirate TV shows and use hulu, I'm on the edge of joining the ship.

Whether it is or isn't, the response stated it was TWC corporate policy. Based on threads in the S3 forum, I've never seen a post where someone on TWC didn't have this. (I know, the happy people don't always post)
