My daughter is getting married this summer. I was thinking of getting the newlyweds a TiVO of their own since they are always using mine.
I got an email today from TiVO offering a combination DVR/lifetime/entertainment pack for $499. The last time bit on an offer like this I had to transfer my original lifetime subscription with the upgrade. I cant see anywhere in the offer if this requires me to transfer any existing life time subscription. It says “upgrade”, but will this work as a gift for someone?
Thanks

I got the same offer when I talked to a TiVO CSR, "as a Valued TiVo customer."
OK. I was quoted a good price on an HD and lifetime for any of us is $299. I think if you read the multiservice discount it doesn't intend for you to not keep the new TiVo personally.

... and lifetime for any of us is $299.
Ah, so it is. Viewing the service plan page without a cookie is $399. Going to pricing site after opening link from email shows $299.
I wasnt considering a multi-service discount for "lifetime" sub. I should have.

Probably trying to compete with all of the 3rd party sellers out there, who are underselling them and without taxes in most cases :) Too bad the $100 off lifetime wasn't on top of the MSD price.

Had me for a second....
I am guessing I am in along line of people who are waiting for Tivo to make a really attractive offer to switch Lifetime from an old unit to an HD one. My guess is it is never going to happen.

I guess I'm not understanding the general consensus. Is it a good deal? I got the same offer in my inbox as well.

Got to https://www3.tivo.com/store/boxes.do?type=renewed&WT.ac=shophome_factoryreneweddvr_img and see what any shmoe can get a refurb TiVo HD plus the entertainment pack for....
....$199.99....
....now add $299 for lifetime with mutiservice discount. $199.99+$299=$498.99
Close,no? ;)
In this case they're offering you a new HD for $499, or $0.01 more.

link to upgrade offer (http://www3.tivo.com/promo/tivoandnetflix/tivoandnetflix4.html?tsn=64900018040E709)As I read it, you have three questions.
Q1. Is $500 a good price?
Yes. Ignore the Entertainment Pack. About the best you will do as a current TiVo subscriber is a $250 TiVoHD (from, say, Amazon) and $300 for Lifetime. The offer saves you $50.
Q2. Is this a transfer? (Do I lose Lifetime on the unit that qualified me for the offer?)
I don't think so. There's nothing in the terms to indicate that other than the use of the term "upgrade."
Q3. Can I gift the upgraded TiVo to my daughter and son-in-law2b?
I think you should be able to. Forum denizens have looked at previous similar offers and found the resulting TiVo to have a plain vanilla status 5. I think you will have to activate the box on your own account and then transfer it rather than handing the newlyweds a pristine box.

Absolutely. It's the best you can do right now on the open market, AFAIK.

if you qualify for MSD then think of this as a TiVo HD for 199$ plus some 50$ movie pack that will have some limited value depending on the person.

Which to me makes this not a good deal. Just the same old deal if you already are a Tivo customer.

Yes, it is a good deal. I purchased a new TivoHD for $199 from Tivo as an inducement for me to keep a line of service. So $199 seems to be Tivo's special promo price for new Tivos as well, although it's not "always" available.

fine print:
Offer includes:
A TiVo HD DVR for $249.99 or a TiVo HDXL DVR for $549.99, Product Lifetime Service ($299), a free TiVo wireless adapter ($59 value), and the Entertainment Pack (valued at over $50)

You've got different fine print than I do. This is what I got:
Offer available for a limited time, while supplies last, from March 16, 2009 to May 11, 2009. TiVo reserves the right to terminate this promotion at any time, for any reason.
1. Offer includes:
A TiVo HD DVR for $199.99 or a TiVo HDXL DVR for $499, Product Lifetime Service ($299), and the Entertainment Pack (Valued at over $50)
I'm wondering why it took them until the last 2 weeks of this promotion before sending the email to me though!

I missed the free wireless adapter. Odd that it's is only mentioned in the fine print. I think I would like to do this, but I apparently made a mistake posting my link to the special offer. It obviously had a unique number in the url that was just for me. If I click the buy it now using that url today it says;
The TiVo Service number associated with this request has already been used for this offer.
Doh. That was dumb of me.

I got this offer a few weeks ago. When I clicked the link in the email, and then tried to start the process of ordering online, it told me my TSN wasn't eligible.
I didn't want the hassle of trying to deal with one of their clueless CSR's, plus I didn't think the deal was all that good anyway, so I decided to stick with my two Series 2's for now. If they bring back the offer to transfer lifetime to a new HD Tivo, though, I'll probably jump on it.

how do you figure that amazon's $259 for an tivo HD + 300 for lifetime which equals 559 is equal to the same thing for 500 from tivo directly?

I hope you are not referring to my original post as spam. I did just realize how much the post title sounds like spam without quotes around the word “upgrade” and ending in a question mark. A good spammer wouldn’t post an offer on a public forum for a deal that was only available to one person in the world.
I forgot what I paid to “transfer” my lifetime subscription from my series 1 to 2, but it was significant. At the time “lifetime’s” were no longer available for anything and I wasn’t sure how much life my series 1 had left in it.
If anyone did order this (using their eligible service number) promotional offer, I’d be curious to know if it does come with the wireless network adapter. It’s just too weird that it is only mentioned in the fine print of the web page. Not mentioned at all in the fine print with the email. It does make the deal sweeter, but I fear it will show up without one and require a hassle with customer service to actually get.

Is Tivo trying to empty their warehouses of HD's and wireless adapters to make room for S4's with built-in wireless?!
I hate to think of alternative reasons for emptying their warehouses (close doors and pay off stockholders )

I ordered using this offer, via phone. I asked if the wireless adapter was actually included as described in the fine print. The CSR said "he could do that" and I received a separate email order confirmation email for just the adapter. So if you really want one, I would place the order by phone and ask nicely for it. :)

I don't think they are emptying their warehouses. More likely, they are trying to continue what they have been doing for a year or more and upgrade people from the S2 platform to the S3 platform. The S3 platform provides more opportunity to make more money per sub and one would assume they will be adding more S3 only features in the future that will add more value.

Lifetime service is for lifetime of the hardware. Lifetime is absolutely non-transferable, except during rare limited time promotional deals from TiVo Inc., which AFAIK, have only occurred twice.
That answers my befuddlement on why anyone would buy a 3 year pre-pay rather lifetime at very nearly the same cost. A 3 year sub is transferable.

and for people who bought a Series-1 and put it on lifetime before mid-2000, and are still using it. Call them and ask yourself.

Well I got this email too and took the deal. I just received my TiVo HDXL yesterday and to my surprise there was no wireless ethernet adapter included in the shipment. Reading the fine print it clearly says that this is part of the deal. What should I do?
