View Full Version : Season Pass w/ No Repeats still gets Suggestions

I see a few threads on this subject dating back to 2006, but perhaps I'm missing the thread that explains 'why'.

Even though I have Season Passes set up for specific shows with the "First Run Only" option, Tivo will still automatically select repeat shows from the same series as "Suggestions" and record them too.

I've seen in some threads a discussion about whether or not the Tivo can detect whether in fact they are repeats, but this seems more basic. If I have a season pass for a show, shouldn't that control Tivo's full behavior for the show, and remove it from being a Suggestions candidate?

The work-around I'm using is to get the season pass, and then give the show a thumbs-down. This is non-intuitive, to say the least (but seems to work)!

If you've given any thumbs-up ratings to the show, why should the TiVo not think you might like to see some repeats? Mine does it all the time, such as picking up NCIS repeats from USA Network while I have a first-run-only season pass for it on CBS HD. For some shows I simply delete all the recordings from Suggestions if I'll never watch them, and for others I do indeed like the occasional repeat. But I'm leaving thumbs up because I'm hoping my TiVo will correctly use them to identify other shows that I might like and not otherwise discover on my own.

I don't have a "Thumbs Up" on the shows; Only the First Run Season Pass. I guess you could consider getting a Season Pass as a virtual thumbs up, but...

The simple answer is that there is no relationship/connection between Season Passes and TiVo Suggestions. They are two completely different and independent processes.

Yup, it does that. Generally it stops once you get a bunch of things thumbs upped/downed.

For example, take a brand new tivo - it doesn't know you yet. So you create a season pass for MythBusters (First Run Only), and Mythbusters get's a implied thumbs up. At this point, the *only* thing it knows about you, is that you like MythBusters. That's about the only thing the suggestion engine has to go on, so it pulls up similar things, including reruns of Mythbusters, because you might like them.

That effect tends to fade dramatically the more season passes, and other thumbs ups/downs you have. As the more the suggestion engine has to go on, the less it falls back on not having any better ideas than reruns of shows you already watch.

So I think we are all in agreement as to what it does, with a couple possibly views on why it does it. And I guess unfortunately, I find it more annoying than others. :o

I'm not sure if getting a season pass is an implied thumbs up or not. If it is, then I'd say a "First Run Only" setting should be an implied thumbs down for repeats. On the other hand, if these two features are completely decoupled, then I'd say they should be coupled and improve the user experience.

Your mileage/opinions may vary. But if nothing else, thank you for confirming that this is expected behavior.

Any show you set to record, whether it be by season pass or through the guide, automatically gets one thumbs up designation.

I decided to turn off recording any and all suggestions by going to the Settings -- Recording -- Tivo Suggestions menu and stopping them completely. The description there states that Tivo Suggestions would only be recorded on unused disk space, but it wasn't clear to me whether the Tivo Suggestions programs that were recorded would always be the first to be erased to make room for new recordings that I chose.

So turning it off completely was the safest approach, IMO.

Unnecessary. When more space is needed for a new recording, the first thing to go will be itens in the "Recently Deleted" folder. After that, items in the "Suggestions" folder will be erased next. Recordings you requested (either manually or with a wishlist or season pass) will always take priority over TiVo suggestions.
