If I cancel service on my Tivo's (and just go with the two DirecTV DVR's I already have) can I still watch the stuff I've recorded on the Tivo? Can I still transfer it to my computer and put it on my portable device? Just got "made redundant" and am trying to figure out a way to save some money. TIA - sheureka

You'll still be able to watch the shows as far as I know. (It's been a year since I've tried this but I don't see Tivo changing this.) I'm also fairly certain you can transfer shows to your PC too without Tivo service but to be safe you could always transfer anything you want before canceling the service. Hopefully someone can confirm the above though...

Watch, yes. Transfer, I don't think so.

Drop Directv and then you can really save some money. I am saving about $960 per year by using OTA and Netflix.

I'm saving $70 a month by dropping down to basic cable, and just using OTA, basic cable, and IPTV like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, etc

Absolutely no or very little OTA? Wow, that sucks. But to answer your questions earlier; you CAN watch the programs that have already recorded as much as you want until they are deleted. You CANNOT transfer to a computer without a current subscription to them (at least based on the fact you cannot transfer between TiVos without sub)

So, transfer the shows you want first to your 'portable device' and then cancel service. then you have what you want and no Tivo fees. I'm guessing you are not on the no-longer-available $6.95/month subscription on either TiVo, otherwise it would be sad to lose that bargain rate.

Hope you can work something out.....

I just called and they gave me 3 months free on both sets - so maybe things will turn around by then. Thanks for all your help and support! - sheureka

I am new to the forum and wanted to know what the lingo is...OTA and others? We have the Tivo Series 2, but it's on a HD plasma so we would like to upgrade to the HD Tivo and I wondered if I could keep this Tivo and put it in a room with a basic TV and xfer between the 2 Tivo's, even though they are not equal? I hope that made sense.....

OTA: Over The Air, also known as antenna

IPTV: TV delivered via internet protocol

You can transfer any program between a Series 2 and Series 3 with the following limitations:

1. HD programming cannot be sent directly to a Series 2. Some have found a workaround by first sending it to a PC and then transferring it to the Series 2, but since the result is unwatchable I don't know why you'd want to bother

2. No copy protected programming can be transferred between any TiVo units, or from a TiVo to a PC. Most of the time this will be from a Series 3 unit as their digital tuners will pick up any digital copy flagging, but it is possible with a Series 2 if you digitally downloaded a copy-flagged program, such as from Amazon.
