This was better than expected. I love it when a show doesn't take itself to seriously.

Cousin Oliver's Diner? Classic!

Am I missing something about the title? Or are they just saying that any show that ret-cons in a long-lost brother has by definition jumped the shark?

If so, they're full of s#%@! :D

At the start of the show it looked like their long lost brother was going to join them in their weekly adventures. That could have been a jump the shark moment. But since it didn't end up that way I don't think the show jumped the shark. Actuallly, I don't think it would have jumped either way, the show's that good.

Did everybody notice the Fonzerelli's Water Park Poster in the diner?

This seriously has to be the best network show that no one seems to be watching.

One thing that they really didn't address here is that it seemed that Sam was getting the chance to be the Big Brother for a change and he really seemed to enjoy it.
Which I'm not sure Dean liked.

I would think that Sam would need some serious medical care after the ghouls went to work on him.

I thought of that as well. Maybe Dean stitched him up.

Can Sam only use his powers on demons? I was wondering why he didn't toss those ghouls across the room.

I kept waiting for him to kick butt and take names too. Maybe his powers only work on demons but are ghouls not demons?

...are ghouls not demons?

It depends who you ask, I suppose. The episode made a point of distinguishing ghouls from demons. Demons come from Hell and possess the bodies of humans. Ghouls don't. For "Supernatural" purposes, ghouls and demons are distinct. Ghouls are not demons any more than vampires or shapeshifters are demons.

In terms of mythology, ghouls are pretty much demons. In fact, the English word 'ghoul' comes from the Arabic ghūl, which literally means "demon". Depending upon the myth and the area of the world, ghouls are alternately demons, reanimated corpses, or ordinary human grave robbers.

I was wondering why the ghouls have to eat humans... couldn't they be satisfied by a nice juicy raw steak?

According to the episode, they take the form of their last meal. Steak would have had an interesting side effect :)

Actually (again, referring to mythology in general, not the show's version of ghouls), ghouls often do take on the shape of animals - particularly hyenas. See: See wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghoul) (so it must be true) for more.
