Hey gang-

So had some friends over and they wanted to see why Tivo was better than their Acme-brand cable company DVR. I showed them Netflix VOD and they admitted that was cool. I then showed them YouTube. They said "show us that one with Susan Boyle!" You know- THIS one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

Piece of cake I say! I search "Susan Boyle" and get everything EXCEPT her Les Miserables performance from "Britains Got Talent". Not even the bootlegs show up!

No problem- I log into my Youtube account on Tivo (where it is Favorited) and it's not even there! WTF??

Soooo...does Youtube restrict what they will show on Tivo vs. what is on the web?

I doubt that they select content that is available from the Tivo.

The only thing that comes to mind is that older videos on YouTube had a different encoding from what they have now. Maybe the transcoding never happened for that video. Or hasn't happened yet. I don't know when and how the videos are coded into the current format (right when you post them or later as computer time is available). The Tivo does require that the content be in the specific format to be able to play them.

Well, this video is only two weeks old- so I'm sure it has the current encoding. (And yes no misprint- it has over 39 million hits so far!)

It really looks to me like perhaps Youtube is intentionally not distributing this and any related videos on Tivo- how weird is that?

I noticed that you also cannot view any full length youtube TV shows or movies on Tivo also.

The Susan Boyle videos were all showing up this morning in the Youtube lists on my Tivo, but I could not play a single one of them. Kept getting an error statement from Tivo to check my Firewall, my Tivo download settings, etc. My settings are correct and my router is not preventing anything from Youtube. I did notice that the only Youtube videos I could play were ones that were short (less than a 3-4 mins). Anything I tried to play above 4 mins presented me with the error screen from Tivo.

Right now, I have to give a  for the Youtube access via Tivo, but I'm more likely to access Youtube stuff from my PC anyway.

Not just Tivo - I was trying to show people turkey fryer accidents and every one we tried said it could not be played on an iPod Touch.

It looks to me like YouTube is selling out and trying go somewhere different from where they started. It wouldn't surprise me at if they're trying to do things more as a content provider than a public access channel. On the other hand, if they're restricting certain content from certain devices, that doesn't make much sense either. I wonder what's really going on.

I saw the Susan Boyle "Les Mis" YouTube videos the TiVo the day after it aired in the UK. Maybe it got moved?

I did notice that the full-length shows aren't available. My laptop has HDMI output so that's only a minor inconvenience...

Confirmed on this thread in the YouTube forums, the uploader has the option to restrict distribution to TV and phones.

Yep, that must be it. I should have clarified in my post that it was mostly "Susan Boyle" videos that I was having the issue. I tested again last night and could play other videos (not related to Susan Boyle) that were much longer than the 7min Boyle videos that will not play. The Boyle videos still won't play, so it must be some sort of restriction setting for TV. I can play those same Boyle videos on the PC without any problem.

Ahhhh- hadn't seen that before. I went and checked my own account for videos I've uploaded, and indeed- buried in there is an option to "not allow syndication to Phone or TV"

'Course why would anyone do that!?!?! Watching Youtube on a PC???? How 2008! ;)
