Hello,
I've read the other forums and I can't find a definitive answer. I'm upgrading a series 2 tivo with a new hard drive, because the old one went bad. Can I use a bare drive or do I really have to use a seagate DB35 or a maxtor quickdrive?
Also can I use any size drive I want? I read something about not using more than 137 gb of any drive no matter what size they are.
Thanks for the help

You can use any pata hard drive that you want. Capacity below 1TB is not an issue.

The size limitation was something that was overcome years ago. I still have 1 TiVo with the 137GB limitation. Any software version 7.x or 8.x (??? I can't remember exactly) or higher will not have the 137GB limitation. The current version is 9.x

The only thing you may want to consider is where the Tivo will be used. If you have it in your bedroom then you'll want a drive that has acoustic management or is known to operate at a low noise level. Otherwise, pretty much any drive will work. You can pay extra for the drives you mentioned, but you probably won't see any difference in how the Tivo performs vs. a generic drive.

It is technically version 5 (6.1 on D-TiVos) where they introduced the LBA48 kernel. LBA48 wasn't generally released until Version 7.x for all Series 2, and 6.2 for D-TiVos. The HR10-250 always had an LBA48 kernel, as does Series 2.5 and 3 TiVos.
