my 2 cents- I hope they make scads of money off that so my monthly fee can at least stay the same if not go down.

I always assumed they've been trying to sell this data for years, but none of the traditional broadcasters were interested because they either didn't understand DVRs are were too stupid to realize how useful the data could be. Or maybe they just wanted to bury their heads and assume nobody was skipping the commercials.

Great! I want to be heard and this way, my cents will count.

yeah - TiVo used to even send out an email with some large over all data on this. This is a years old initiative and maybe TiVo was just looking for some PR on it so made an anouncement.
However "old" this idea is, I think it is a good one at that. Perhaps it could save shows that networks are dropping as they think the ratings are too soft.....perhaps finally seeing the total numbers would save shows like TSCC, Dollhouse, Firefly, etc......

Dateline 2010: TiVo announces Tivo Series 4 that includes a camera to count the people in the room, ala the Nielsen people meter.
Dateline Fall 2010 TCF: "Announcing TivoPeeper, new program to watch your home from your S4 when you're away." :D

Read more than the headline.
Tivo already sells this data nationally. It's nothing new. Today they announced availability of the information for local markets. I.e., now your local broadcast affiliates can measure the competitive success of their news shows using not just Neilsen, but also Tivo data. Until now, this program was only available to the national networks.
This is a boon to Tivo. Local news is really competitive to be the "number 1 news source" in a lot of markets, from mid-sized to major. This could provide a decent cashflow.
Also, IIRC, Stop/Watch data is opt-in.

I think that the difference being explained here is that the information is now much more detailed (second-by-second).
Before my local station could have learned that I watch their 11 p.m. newscast every night. Now they'll be able to tell that it takes me 12 minutes to watch their 35 minute broadcast, and learn what it is that I have skipped over.

They already had the "second-by-second" info. Didn't they post that Janet Jackson at the Superbowl was the most replayed moment in tv?

The camera has been there since the Series 1.

That's what the electrical tape is for.

Much ado about nothing.
I really like how Dollhouse tells me exactly how many times to push "+30 seconds"...

That's just the one they tell you about that makes you feel secure when you cover it up with electrical tape.

Much ado about nothing.
Its not for me because I only use DirecTivos and keep the phone unplugged.
Otherwise I'd be concerned.

Do not worry, the government - no I mean the TiVo - is here to protect you.
And hopefully the shows, at least the ones a majority of us love and record every time they are on. Though what about all the kid shows on my TiVo.....

Shouldn't this also affect the price of ads? An ad that Tivo watchers stop and watch should cost more to air than an ad that people FF.

No, that would be more based on the entertainment value of the ad. However, I think the first ad in a given break should be worth more. It's more likely that a person with a DVR will at least catch the first part of that ad, and if it's a worthwhile ad, they might actually watch it.
I find that I watch the first ad in a block if it's interesting. But, adds in the middle don't even have a chance to catch my eye.

Every has their own standards - just like some people install programs that come with adware that to me would be spyware - so I avoid them.

There's a difference... adware degrades the performance of your computer.
