I just ordered a new Tivo HD to replace my 6 year old Series 2 Tivo. Could anyone tell me if the fan in the Tivo HD unit runs all the time? It did on the Series 2. Thanks

Wow...you joined TCF four years ago, but didn't post until today. That must be a new record!

I'm not sure if it runs all the time or not. I have a new TiVo HD and, if it does run all the time, it's barely audible (if you're worried about noise).

And someone let me know about the fan in the Series 3 (mine is either very quiet and slow or I just can't tell it ever runs). Thank you.

The TivoHD and Series3 have a fan, but you will not notice it.

To answer your question... no, it does not run all the time. I've seen mine start while connecting my wireless adapter.

Thanks for all the replies. The fan in the Series 2 that I had was on all the time. I could tell because I could see it from the back of the unit and it was a big dust collector. I've noticed that the Comcast DVR doesn't have a fan running all the time, so I had hoped that the Tivo HD was the same.

The fan in mine always run and makes no noise, the disk makes much more noise than the fan. I get temps around 45C reported in the system information screen.

I agree the fan is a big dust collecter. I take the cover off my S3 once a year and blow the dust and pet hair out. I have to do the same thing with my computers. My wife is a big pet lover so I live with a dog and a couple cats. Anything with a fan gets pretty fouled with pet hair after a while.

If that is so you have a problem as the fan never stops in the Series 3 all models after power is applied, it slows down at some point in the boot process and never speeds up unless the TiVo gets too hot.

When I saw the title to this thread I thought, "Oh boy....just another person who's in love with his TiVo..."
