Just wondering. I prefer Date, my wife always uses Name.

I voted name.

I used to go by date because I didn't want to "get behind" on my shows or lose them due to space, but now with 1TB in my TivoHD, it's much easier to find shows when they're listed alphabetically.

Good points Steve. I have the small 160 gig drive, so I currently prefer date for the reasoning you mentioned. When I eventually upgrade to 1TB, it might make sense to switch.

With 2TB of storage on my THD and previously 700gb on my S1 by name was the ONLY way I could find anything.

I've got a 500Gb drive in an S2 and 250GB drive in a DT S2 (I know, it should be the other way around) and I list by date.

Before groups existed I preferred date, but with groups I prefer name.

That brings up a good point. Using named sort with groups enabled means the shows are still sorted by date within each group!

Exactly. Find the show by name, then you can find the oldest episode by simply jumping to the bottom of the group. It's really the best of both worlds.

...because that's how I process things. :o

...but this is interesting...I may have to try it!

I like Dates but I wish you could choose oldest or newest instead of it always being the newest on top. I would rather have the folders on top with the oldest episodes so as I watch and delete it re-sorts the folders.

I prefer date, but like the OP my wife prefers name.

I prefer to know that there's a new episode waiting because I can see the folder near the top of the list rather than having to go searching for the folder to see if there's something new.

I use dates because I can quickly look at the top row to see if it represents a new unwatched show for me.

With foldering, all my NP entries typically take up just one screen anyhow.

No real preference and constantly switch between them. If we're looking to watch a specific show we'll view by name, if we're looking to pick something watch we'll generally toggle to date.

One screen?! I can only imagine that you are the sole user of the TiVo, don't watch mutch TV and have the original hard drive.

Yes, we have 3 TiVos, and I am the sole user of exactly one of them (this one). And it is the original hard drive. I watch it most evenings though. Admittedly sometime I watch things out of the Suggestions Folder, which is my biggest folder. :D

OTOH, my wife uses all of one TiVo and most of the third (shares it with my son), and her NP on both of them are bunches and bunches of screens.

Ironically I'm not sure if she watches any more TV than I do. I don't think the amount of TV you watch necessarily correlates to how many screens of shows you have. You could make the argument that if you have enough time to watch a lot of TV, then you'll be more likely to be caught up and not backlogged (like my wife is), and more likely to have your NP fit on one screen.

I actually had to rewrite my reply twice because it sounded like I was being rude. Now that I think about it you are right that if someone had a lot of time to watch TV then the NPL wouldn't be as full.

My NPL is countless pages and I do not have enough time to watch all of the TV I'd like to. I find myself adding more season passes and then my fricken thing is full up in no time.

I kid you not, if a potential hack existed to have two 2TB drives I would instantly spend the next few days making it work.

I voted name. I like having things organized on the NPL by name, that way the kids can easily find their shows. I generally do not let too much build up, so automatic deletion is not really an issue for me. I have a relatively puny hard drive in one of my TiVo's. That said, all of my programs are KUID and the kids shows are not. I then delete when done and the kids shows are constantly updating. Works for me.

I voted by date. Even on my S1, I sort by date most of the time. (Slow 0 Record Thumbs-Up)

On my S3 & TivoHD, they stay with groups sorted by date the vast majority of the time (and *ungrouped* sorted by date once in a while if I want to try to figure out if something was inadvertently deleted.. I know I can't do anything if it was, but I at least want to know..). If I really really want to find something specific, then sometimes I'll change to group by name. But rarely, since I generally know about where in the many-pages of list a show will be (due to new eps being recorded or not.. e.g. I knew that Life on Mars was at 4/1 in the list, as I caught up with the last episodes.)

Name, in folders.

I am surprized Date is so popular! I could never find anything that way, it would drive me nuts. I have 250+ hours though.

I can see where people wouldn't want the date order if they have a thick NP list, and they don't watch things pretty much in date order.

I think even when my NP used to be thicker, I preferred to watch the oldest stuff first, so that nothing would be to far after the air date before I watched it.

But I suppose some people might want to for example, watch every ep of a certain show before moving on to another show to watch. I'd think you've have to have a fairly sizable backlog for this to be an issue.

I have S3 with 1TB Expander and my NPL is 5-6 pages long (even with folders) and I use Date as the option. There are 5-6 shows that I want to watch each week when they are recorded (24, Lost, TSCC, L&O, Criminal Minds, Mad Money) while all the others just pile up in folders until I'm ready to view them. By using the Date sort, my priority shows are usually always on Page 1.
