I have a 2003 series 2 black with the little tivo guy in the middle. I am to lazy to take it out and find a model no. The original drive has already been updated to a 500gb drive. I want to add a second drive. What is the largest drive I can put in?

I think it's ok to link this place: Check this 2 TB Series 2! (http://mfslive.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=599)
Otherwise, 1.1 TB is your max internal drive size when using MSFLive. So most just buy a 1 TB drive. Get one from the list on this Drive Upgrade FAQ (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=370784), just scroll down a little over half the page and there is a list there of the best drives for a DVR. Note that the drives at the bottom of the list are quieter.

I don't see anything about series 2 on the upgrade link you gave me. Oh my gosh 2300 hours. I think I can get by with 1tb. When you put in a 1tb do you have to worry about the heat?

Right, the upgrade link was merely a place to point out the good hard drives to buy, since you will want a particular kind, and they have already scoped that out to a certain extent for us. The ones that run cooler and quieter than normal PC hard drives.
So, yeah, 1TB should do you fine since you don't have to worry about recording in HD quality like the HD models do, and it will give you plenty of room.
So, from that guide, one of the best hard drives for the money is a Western Digital AV-GP 1000GB (1TB) WD10EVCS or WDEVVS for a little over $100. They apparently are the quietest out there and will not run hot at all.

Heh, my S3 has a 1 TB drive, and is almost full with entirely Tivo Basic programs.... a *lot* of it is talk shows that I go through and dub off en masse (the musical performances for example), but it's still full..

Note that for a Series2, you'll need a SATA/PATA converter for the 1TB drives, since the Series2 only does PATA. The biggest PATA drives I've seen recently are 500GB.

There are instructions on DDB that would allow you to create a single 2tb internal drive. It would be many hours of work but it is technically possible.
Using the currently available tools 1.1 is the max (though a bug fix from TiVo or a hacked kernel could easily bump that to 2tb)
