View Full Version : Interesting Sharp TV/Tivo feature

I was looking at the menus on my Sharp Aquos, and there is way to set the labels on the inputs. When you get to the menu choice, there are a standard set of choices (VCR, DVD, Cable, Satellite, etc), but when I'm on the HDMI input that is connected to the Tivo, the choice "Series 3 HD" comes up. That obviously has to be something that the Tivo is sending to the TV. This does not happen on my other HDTV, an LG. It's kind of cool but a little strange. Has anyone seen anything similar?

OK, now it gets really weird. I can select "Series 3 HD" as the tag for the input, but it doesn't stay, after I power down the TV it reverts to "HDMI" (which is the default label). I can change it to "DVR/PVR" and that works as expected (as does changing the component input to "DVD"), but why show something that doesn't seem to be able to be selected. Weird.

My Sharp does the same thing. It also shows 'PS3' when my PS3 is connected.

Happens here as well but I just use custom tags that stay permanently ie: TiVo, Wii, etc....

How can you generate custom tags, and what sort of TV do you have that lets you do that?

I have a Vizio and rename my input tags also. It's a menu option for the TV. I have renamed 3 of the HDMI inputs and one component input.

I have a Sharp Aquos 46D65 and if u go into the menu and select Inputs you can create custom tags. It has a little on screen keyboard.

I'll have to check and see if my Aquos does that with my PS3. My Vizio does something pretty cool. I changed the settings to Letterbox on one of the HD channels. Now it automatically goes to Letterbox on all of the HD channels, but the standard def channels stay normal.

I guess I need to check that too...

But I'm not really surprised - there is the DDC information that could be used to communicate information between the source and the display. The latest PC monitors even support stuff like this so you don't have to futz with monitor controls - just use a software app to do it.

Edit: I guess the reason I've never investigated it is because I just have my Harmony change the inputs, so even if it says "Input 1" it's still the right input...
