My Tivo DSR 704 with 6.4a is done...it is locking up, can't access menus, after reboot I tried connecting to DVR service, it connects but will not load data. I think it's the drive, can I replace it with another DSR704 hard drive? I have another used 704 unit somewhere in my basement. Can I simply swap drives?

Yes you can but you will have to do a Clear and Delete Everything. Remember you will be replacing it with a 5 year or older hard drive which is nearing the mean time between failures. At the current cost of drives it may be better to buy new and load the image with instantcake from DVRupgrade for $20.00. :)

Thanks for the reply! Well I had great success, I swapped the drives, did the clear and delete which took 1.5hrs!!, went through the guided set up and voila! DSR 704 with 6.2 back up and running!
I wish there was a way to download 6.4a...I connected to the DVR service, with no 6.4a download.
I agree with you, I will be buying a new drive in the near future, just nice to get it back up and running today!

I don't think 6.4a is in the stream anymore. They might occasionally put it back in the stream, or it might download over time one slice at a time via the phone calls. If you don't want to wait weeks for it you could get the 6.4a image from DVRupgrade (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/)for $20.

6.4a is available via dial up. I have an RCA DVR40 that always works. I downloaded it three times last week. It is only available over the phone and depends on your old version. It always works with 6.2a but failed with 3.1. :)

What number does your Tivo dial? Maybe theres something to where the Tivo dials....maybe???

I dial a Colorado number but I only have one machine on which it always works, a lot of people are having trouble with the dial up. That is why I recommend instantcake from DVRupgrade. It is only $20.00 and that way you get it for sure. :)
