View Full Version : OTA channel assignment not right, how to fix?

Hi, using Series 2 Tivo and Insignia converter box for OTA signal and I have a problem with one channel in particular in the Pittsburgh area. For the longest time, I didn't think I received Channel 4-WTAE-ABC. I did a simple Google search today to figure out why the signal was so awful and found this statement from the channel below.

If I put 51-1 in, I get the right channel which displays as 4-1 WTAE on the converter box display correctly, but obviously as only channel 51 on Tivo, which isn't even on my channel lineup. Going to 4-1 directly on Tivo brings me no signal. Is there any way to change how ONE channel is dialed in? I repeated Guided Setup, but really there seems to be no correct option.

***Update: NEVERMIND, the converter box was able to fix the issue with a simple autosearch of channels. I guessed it was able to assign the channel correctly itself. Thanks!


Under the FCC rules for HDTV Program System Information Protocol (PSIP)
all stations broadcasting an HDTV signal must embed a reference to the
original analog TV station. So on DTV receivers that meet the PSIP
standard, WTAE-DT channel 51 will report to the viewer's onscreen channel
display as 4-1, since we are WTAE-TV channel 4. Our regular analog
channel would report as channel 4-0 on this type receiver. All other
broadcasters in the country must follow the same rules. So when the viewer
sees 4-1 he is in fact watching our HDTV Channel.

4:3 The reason for this is that all the
major networks only provide true HD widescreen programming in prime time
between the hours of 8 and 11 PM. At all other times our station, and all
the other stations in the country only have analog 4:3 programming so we
upconvert it to HD. It is expected that as more of the country converts to
HDTVs, more and more programming will be in widescreen 16:9 HD, much like
the country's conversion from black and white to color TV.
