Just read up that the new star trek movie has 4 iPhone "comics" available that act as a prequel to the prequel. However, it gives away a major plot point I think, so beware...
Available in the app store and read more about it Here on the interweb (http://www.applegazette.com/iphone/star-trek-movie-prequel-comes-to-iphone-ipod-touch/)

Looks interesting, thanks for the link. The article says there are 4 issues, but I could only find 3 in iTunes:confused:

I guess they are saving the last issue for closer to movie release.
The 3rd one does end with a "to be continued..."

I don't have an iPhone!:D
But after reading the reviews in the iTunes Store I got spoiled and now I have to ask this question: (Spoilers involved)
Are there TNG characters in the movie? Someone in the reviews asked why Data was captain of the E

Well, this is a prequel to the movie, so just because they are in these comics doesn't mean they are in the movie. But yes TNG characters are in the comic.
Anyhow, the comics take place in the future, ie after the most recent movie, and it's about the bad guy in the new movie and how he becomes a bad guy.
Somehow, bad guy time travels to the past, maybe by using the technology he "aquires" in the comic.

Because I have no idea if this is a spoiler or not, I'll spoiler it to be safe.
The movie coming out this year isn't a prequel. It is a re-imagining of the original Star Trek universe. As I understand it, the event of this movie did not happen in the original series. From how the characters meet to the location of where the Enterprise was built.
I'm interested in these comics though. Anyone know who is responsible for the art/writing? I don't have iTunes on this machine and can't go to the site referenced above.

The new Star Trek movie is not a re-imagining but it's also not a prequel to what exactly happens in the original series.

How can it be neither? It's either a re-imagining or it's a true prequel. I don't want to veer too much into this because it will probably involve too much spoilery discussion and it certainly would mean going off the topic of the thread.

I can't check while I'm at work but this sounds like it's taken from the Star Trek Countdown comic book that IDW is publishing.

It's neither because, and these are not big spoilers because it will be revealed within minutes of the movie starting, I believe:
It's not a re-imagining because it takes place in the original continuity, just before we've seen it, and it's not true prequel because it deals with the past being changed through time travel. You can argue that certain things look more advanced, but they can't be walking around in plaster sets in 2009 movies.

They're apps that cost $.99 each. You can get them on the Touch.

The events in the film are the results of someone in the Picard (or later) era going back in time and corrupting the timeline.
It IS in the same "universe" depicted in the original STAR TREK series and the movies and sequel shows, but thanks to the bad guy, the timeline of that universe gets altered, leading to the events in the film.

My VERY first reaction was 'eww'.. but that actually makes me want to like the movie more. So it's more a parallel universe to the original Trek, and not a bastardization.
(Though 'Lost' has become one of the best time travel shows ever now!!)

Thanks for the heads up about the iPhone version of these comics! I read the first and it was worth every penny of the $.99.

You know, if Marvel or DC offered more comics like this, I'd be all over it. :)

If it's not a lot of trouble, could someone post a screenshot from an iPhone (or Touch) showing how these comics look on the screen?
(And maybe the app store has screenshots already - I'll go check there now)

On the iPhone?
I do know that there's a bunch of webcomic creators that are doing iPhone comics. Not sure of the details, though.

The store has the first 5 pages of each comic.

Yeah, but I'm talking mainstream titles with the ability to subscribe to the latest issue.

Maybe a Kindle would be better for comics.

That's what I figured. I jus' thought I'd mention the webcomic thing as well in case you were interested.
