I have a toshiba tivo sd-h400 unit with lifetime basic service. I downloaded the desktop software but when I got to the part to enter the media access key I discovered my unit does not have one. It seems a few years ago when tivo began offering the home media option for free I got a message saying toshiba tivo unit owners would not be included to get the free home media option. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know of anyway to get the functionality of home media without a media access key?

You'll need Plus service.

TiVo-To-Go only works with a TiVo Plus Subscription, either the monthly or Lifetime. TiVo-To-Go will not work with the TiVo Basic service.

In order to get a Media Access Key, you must sign up for TiVo Plus.

Indeed, the networking feature is only available with regular (not basic) service. I have an SD-H400, and it's nice, but without networking, it's limited in its use.

Just to clarify -- on TiVo Basic, the box is able to connect to the TiVo Service using a network connection (instead of the phone line) -- it's the Home Media Features (Music, Photos, TiVoToGo, and TTCB) that require the box have a TiVo Plus subscription.

Good point, Bob. I have the wireless TiVo dongle set up for this, and it 'phones home' through the network. I need to be clear to avoid confusion.
