I've been using Handbrake to convert my commercial-edited tivo files to ipod format. I've been doing successfully for around a month.
However, recently when as soon as I select a source files the program immediately shuts down! It briefly shows it's scanning the files but then shuts down!
I don't think this is the right forum to be in, but I'm desperate to find some kind of video converter I can use on my PC with an ipod...
Thanks!
Well, the *right* forum is here:

I'll warn you that they're kind of prickly and short-tempered, so it helps to collect all the information they're asking for before reporting an issue (and check to make sure someone else didn't already ask the question and get the answer).

I'll warn you that they're kind of prickly and short-tempered,Yes they can, however they code one heck of an application!!
Kyle, have you restarted your PC? Does it do it with every file or just one in particular? CLI or GUI? Version? What program are you using to edit out commercials? More detail is needed.
As Yoav pointed out, It might be better to ask your question there, but a *few* of us use the app and we may be able to help before having to post over there.

heh heh, yeah I've looked over their forums and they most certainly are prickly. I figured I'd give these boards a go before I went there.
I've restarted the PC, it's GUI windows v. 0.9.3 the most recent, and I'm using Nero Vision which I've used for a while to edit out commericials.
The thing is, it is an instantaneous crash. Every source I've attempted to open it shuts down hand brake completely. I click source>filename>open and then it looks like the scan window opens for a second but it shuts down so fast I cant read anything...

What are my options if handbrake is dead to convert my tivo videos to my ipod???

For starters, I would uninstall then reinstall HB and try again.
As for options, try the Command Line Interface (CLI) version, it's a separate download/install. The GUI (if you get it to run) interface creates a CLI string that can be used in a batch file. To see what string I use, check THIS (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=7138211#post7138211) post of mine.
While the batch file is automatically called by TVAP, it can be run manually by right clicking on your video file and choosing Open with..., browse to the batch file the first time and it show up in the Open with pop-up subsequent times.
If you're doing the whole 'download/convert' thing, I strongly recommend you try out kmttg. (It uses ffmpeg to convert by default, which should let you work around Handbrake failing).
On the plus side, It can even 'try' to remove commercials for you automatically. On the down side, sometimes the automatic commercial removal is iffy...
Or you can use any other gui front-end to ffmpeg or mencoder...
1. Post on the HB forum giving as much detail as you can and offering to provide a small sample file clip that crashes HB. I think they will be curious to analyze what's causing the crash.
2. Try running a Quick Stream Fix on a problem file with VideoReDo. You can do this for free with their trial registration. After you load the file into VRD, hit Ctrl-L and copy the file info to the clipboard and post here and/or on the HB forum.
