Recorded program display is shrunken

Whether I record to a PC or record to VCR, the picture is squashed horizontally, i.e, the picture looks like a 3:3 aspect ratio instead of 4:3. Hardware is a 5-year-old Series 2 (with current software) fed from a DirecTV H20 through composite cables. I guess the pertinent question is: what controls the aspect ratio? Does the TV feed back info to the Tivo?

how are you "recording" these programs to your PC?

are you transfering the files from your Tivo or are you hooking your Tivo up through a capture card? (sounds like the latter based on your wording)

in order to answer your question better i need to know how you are doing what you are doing

I am using Tivo Desktop 2.7 to transfer from Tivo to a PC, then viewing in Windows Media Player; or, I use the Record to VCR menu.
