One of my Tivos, an RCA DVR40, has been offline for over a month because of a bad harddrive. I purchased and installed the harddrive and now I can get live TV but, a message appears that says that the Tivo needs to make a phone call before it can record. I now don't have a land line phone.

I know this is answered somewhere and I tried going through the FAQ. I understand that there is an adapter to change the digital signal from your computer phone, (I have magic jack) to the analog signal needed by the Tivo. If so, which one should I get or, is there a better option?

Thanks,
Dave

Oh, I have a Tivo with what I understand has bad tuners. What are my options?

Don't think it is possible to get a Tivo or any other kind of data device to connect through Magic Jack. The only VoIP service that sometimes works with data calls is Vonage. Take a look at this thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=415466&highlight=majic+jack).

CCS Corp (http://www.ccscorporation.net/PVR_T.htm). can refurbish Tivos/DTivos.

Edit: Forgot to mention the easiest workaround would be to take the unit to a friend's house that has normal phone service and let it finish the initial setup.

Just as a note, I used to use my Series 1 and Series 2 Tivos with Vonage and never had any issues.

Have you tried plugging in the TiVo to the MagicJack?

You only need to do this for software updates (none recently for this model) and for pay-per-view (which you can do on the DirecTV website instead). Guide updates come from the satellite signal.

I would try it a few times to see if you can get through so it can check, find no updates, and then go on its merry way.

You also need it to activate the DVR service initially.
