Desktop Plus Question

If I purchase a key to upgrade to DT Plus, is that for one year like anti-virus software, or until the next higher version comes out like Nero?

Are there any other programs that will download from my TivoHD units?

You don't need to buy plus to download shows from the TiVo. You can even use a browser to do that. If you want the benefit of auto-transfers, transcoding video for portable devices, or sending more formats back to the TiVo for playback, you can look at upgrading to Plus.

Before doing that though I would recommend checking out free alternatives like pyTivo or streambaby (see links in my sig).

pyTivo and streambaby are for uploading your shows from your computer to your TiVo.

TDP is only needed for converting to other devices like ipod and to be able to transfer more file types other than .mpg and .tivo to the Tivo like .mp4, .avi

The thing I want to do most is download video podcasts and other net video like those in the Browse free videos after you click on Video on Demand. Also I would like to view some vacation videos I have on my computer.

With pyTivo or streambaby do you need to have the video file on you computer or can use an url to get the video to your tivo?

They have to be on your computer, but they can be on your computer in almost any format.
