I just go a wd tv and it plays hd mpeg files in hd. It also plays mpeg4 and alot of others.

It can't play them directly, but if you use tivodecode or videoredo on them to convert them to mpeg2 they play fine. I go one step farther and convert them to MP4 using Handbrake to make the files smaller.

How do you convert them to mp4? The software that came with it wont do 1080 hd output.

The previous poster listed 'Handbrake' (which is an mp4 encoder.. just google it). Just keep in mind that making a 1080p mp4 is VERY VERY cpu-intensive and will probably take a few hours.
You can also use kmttg to do the download/tivodecode/encode-to-mp4 in one program.
