I've been having all the locking up/ gray screen problems with my series 3 for months now. All a long getting promises from TiVo that it would be fixed soon. The lastest release came out and I've still got the same issues.

Now today my series 2 isn't creating a buffer... EVEN ON RECORDED SHOWS!!! You can't fast forward through commercials?!!?!?

What do you mean by "isn't creating a buffer"?

You mean that when you play back a recording you can't FF? What happens when you try?

Sounds like faulty hardware, since you got 2 units going bad. Are you sure they are in a well ventilated area?

Sounds like faulty hardware, since you got 2 units going bad. Are you sure they are in a well ventilated area? ... and on a good surge protector?

Also, what are you using for a remote to control the TiVo S2? If not the peanut that came with it, try the original remote. Be sure there isn't any source of interference (stuck button on the remote or any other remote nearby, bright sun shining directly on TiVo's IR sensor, ... ).

And I agree, a better description of what it is (and/or isn't) doing will help a lot.

I was having the same issue with my replacement Tivo Series 3 Box.
Yes, I had the same issue on my original box and Tivo graciously exchanged it for me free of charge. However, the second unit they sent HAD EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM! They also told me something about some kind of software fix (that never happened).

Rather than go back through Tivo AGAIN to get yet another faulty unit, I replaced the hard drive myself and have not had any such issues since.

Strangely enough, I replaced the Tivo-supplied hard drive with exactly the same model.

My theory is that Tivo simply got a huge batch of faulty hard drives.

I'm not saying this is what's causing your issue, but just sharing my experience with a similar issue.
