Convert from .tivo to .mp4, but keep meta data?

I have TD plus so I can convert to H.264 using that, but it degrades quality, especially for HD programs. Plus it doesn't maintain the program meta data.

Is there a way to extract the program meta data from TiVo files?

kmttg can generate pyTivo metadata files from .TiVo files and encode to various other formats using existing encoding profiles or you can add your own custom profile. If you are just looking to extract the raw xml metadata from a .TiVo file you can use a tool such as tivodecode:
tivodecode --mak MAK -D -x "file.TiVo"
(substitute MAK for your Media Access Key number)

If you're just looking to extract metadata from .TiVo files your easiest solution is probably pyTiVoMetaGen (see signature for link).

You could also try kmttg it will transcode and keep the meta data for you.
