View Full Version : Moved my iTunes library to new external HD, now iTunes can't find my converted shows

I was running out of disk space on my PC, so I added an external drive, which went smoothly. I have apparently successfully moved my old iTunes library over to the new drive.

I next wanted to make sure that TiVo Desktop Plus (version 2.5.1) would convert the tv shows and place them in a location on the new external drive for iTunes to find them as it had done previously (automatically once the shows were converted for iPod).

So I went to the appropriate menu in TiVo Desktop and gave it a new destination folder (on the new external HD) to use. The conversion went fine and the converted version of the show appeared in the correct new location. iTunes, however, doesn't find it automatically. Is there a setting I should be changing in TiVo Desktop that would let TiVo Desktop tell iTunes that there's a new location in which it'll be depositing shows to be added to the library?

If I use the iTunes command to add a folder to its library, it does find the newly converted show and add it properly, and I can see the show listed in the "TV shows" category of my library. However, it doesn't seem to find shows subsequently added to that folder.

Is there a way for me to tell iTunes to be looking for new shows to appear in a certain folder, so I don't have to do it manually each time I bring a show over from my TiVo to watch on my iPod? Or is iTunes already looking in a certain location, but perhaps I messed up that folder structure when I moved everything over to the new hard drive?

Thanks for any assistance or advice!

First of all, you did tell change the "iTunes Music Folder location" in the iTunes preferences to it's new location right? And the location of the iPod files generated by TDP are being placed into a folder nested with in the iTunes Music Folder?

I should also probably ask how you migrated the iTunes library to it's new location.

Also do you have "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library" enabled or disabled.

iTunes doesn't care where the location of a file is. You could have left your present iTunes library in it's current location. And set TDP to use the external drive to store the files. Then when TDP is finished converting it would tell iTunes to add the new file to it's library. At least that's what should happen. If TDP doesn't let iTunes know, well then you'd have to either import manually or use a script to do it.

Umm... I don't understand why no free alternative to TDP exists. For Windows (it does for MacOS X). And why are you still using 2.5.1?

Thanks, all those things were set up correctly, so iTunes was functioning as it should other than the issue with getting shows converted with TiVo Desktop Plus to show up.

I didn't know that a new version was available. :o

Anyway, the problem has been resolved. I decided to uninstall and reinstall TiVo Desktop Plus, and in doing so found out about the newer version that you referred to. I installed it, and everything straightened itself out. I assume it was the reinstall, not the new version that fixed it, but I can't be sure, though.

Thanks for your ideas!
