I use the TiVo brand USB to 802.11G wireless adapter on one of my DVRs and it works well. It is the only adapter that will do WPA encryption, so if that is how you are set up, it is really your best option short of using a bridge.

A router forms a network. The adpater is a client on that network. All traffic flows through the router getting from one place to the other. Most wireless routers will let you connect devices to them wirelessly or via Ethernet wired connections.

It allows you to connect a TiVo Series 2 or 3 model to your broadband router. It lets you download guide and other data updates at a much faster speed, and allows you to use certain services through your TiVo such as Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, and Netflix.

If you had another Series 2 or 3 TiVo that is similarly networked in your home, you could transfer videos (subject to certain limitations) between machines.

The TiVo wireless adapter lets your TiVo connect to the internet through your router (D-Link).

The TiVo needs to connect to the TiVo company servers periodically to get guide data, software updates, etc. it can do this through a telephone line or through a broadband internet connection. If you have one TiVo, the network connection can let you transfer shows to a PC for viewing, and you can reformat the shows for a portable video player, like an iPod.

If you have two or more TiVos, you can transfer shows between them, called MRV (multiroom viewing), unless they are copy protected by your cable provider.
