View Full Version : Pixallation on SDV channels - Tuning Adapter

Need some advice here. Here is the problem. I have not had any pixallation problems until I got my tuning adapter from TWC. I have the Tivo and a cable modem on a splitter. Even with the splitter, my signal is 37 dBmV (Had a TWC DVR - so that is where I am getting the number). When the tuning adapter was hooked up, I now get video pauses and pixallation on only the SDV channels. I checked the diagnostics on the tuning adapter, and I get the following:
Tuner: -3 dBmV
FDC: 4 dBmV
RDC: 32 dBmV
Would a inline amplifier help with the issue I am having here?

The numbers you're posting are meaningless in this context; they are likely four different things measured by two different devices...
-3 dBmV is about 100 times weaker than 37 dBmV... (You're citing a LOSS of 40dB) That's assuming those numbers are apples and apples. I have a hard time thinking they're measuring the same thing; they would be closer if they were. IE, The 37dBmV is not given with respect to a specific channel / frequency band as the others are
FDC: Forward Data Channel
RDC: Reverse Data Channel

The 37dbmv number makes no sense. The numbers you are getting from the TA are pretty good... could be a bit higher. A more important thing to look for would be the RS Corrected and RS Uncorrected counts in the TiVo DVR Diagnostics when you are tuned to the 'offending' channel. If the RS Corrected number is ticking up then you have a possible signal problem.
An inline amp - like right behind the TV a few feet before the TiVo/TA is totally useless. A distribution amp needs to be right at the cable entry point of the house to have any value.
Perhaps you can describe how the cable is handled between the house entry and the TA/Tivo... splitters?. The 32dbm RDC tends to suggest that you dont have much between it and the main feed.

+37dBmV is outrageously high. It's very hard to believe it is a real number. Typical values range from about +5dBmV at the very high end to -15 dBmV or so. If your levels are truly anything over +5, then you probably need an attentuator. Although I am emphaticaly not saying this is the case, it would make sense, as the TA has a +3dB gain, and if your signal is already too hot...

Uh, try again. It's 10,000 times weaker. Forty dB is a factor of 10,000, or the equivalent of adding or removing about thirteen 2-way splitters inline with the device. For a fixed impedance, the voltage difference is a factor of 100, but the power goes as the square of the voltage.
