View Full Version : Strange Event Recording Behaviour

Hi All,
I thought I'd seen it all after using TiVo from Day 1, but I have a new (for me) problem! Some films, about 1 in 4, are not starting to record until about 10 mins in. It is not a channel change problem as watching the recording back you can clearly see no channel change request at the the start and then one pops up later when the channel dutifully changes. It isn't a time problem as the recording starts on time! It's as though TiVo says to itself, right 7.00 o'clock, start recording. Then about 10 mins in it remembers that it hasn't changed channel and does it, better late than never. Of course this is useless.
Any suggetions?

Martin - sounds like infra-red pollution to me: TiVo is waiting until it's 'clear' to send the channel change.

Stray infra red. The TiVo waits until there is no IR being received before changing channel.
- Remote jammed on somewhere.
- Low energy bulb.
- Some plasma screens
- Fluorescent tube.
- Video sender interference.
agree with the above posters. also check for stray sunlight.
you can apparently use a camcorder to search for bright spots of IR that you can't see with the naked eye.

I didn't know that was possible. I've got a Panasonic 37" plasma right next to the TiVo and I've been getting occasional times where the Sky box isn't receiving the full channel number.

Thanks guys, that makes perfect sense as I recently bought a video sender which requires an IR wand to sit in front of the TiVo. I have moved this and will monitor the results but I would be very surprised if this isn't the solution.
Cheers,

My Marmetek video sender had to have a whole collection of ferrite rings attached to its leads, especially the power supply, before it would stop "dribbling" infra red (as seen on camcorder) into the TiVo preventing it changing channel. I was going to fit a timer to TiVo end so that it was only on say after 10pm when watching TV in bed, but video sender stopped working completely one day.
I now have a wireless video send my brother gave me (£3 car boot sale) which I think is a available in B&Q. This one does not need ferrites on its leads, though I have used a ferrite on the PSU lead as a cable shortner. This one works fine.

As well as camcorders, Digital cameras with an LCD screen can show infra red.

Including those on mobile phones :)
