Copying from Tivo to a laptop

I’m a rookie at making DVDs or watching tv on my laptop. So to help me get started, is it possible to transfer shows to my laptop from a Tivo series2 ? If so would I need to burn it to a DVD or is it possible to watch direct. I travel alot and would like to watch some of my shows on the road. Thanks for any help to get me started in the right direction.
