I recorded a show yesterday, and when I went to watch it today, it was gone. The history said, "This recording was deleted earlier than planned Tue 2/3 8:21 pm because the space was needed for another recording: Live 6 pm"

First, my drive wasn't full. In fact, I had deleted 6-8 hours worth of programming earlier in the day, and only two programs were recorded after that: the show that was deleted, and another show which aired at 8pm. Both shows were to be recorded at Basic Quality with a "Save Until I Delete" option. Last evening, while the program was deleted (6pm or 8:21 pm, according to the message?), I was home and the TV was off, and only one program was scheduled to be recorded -- there is no reason, conflict or otherwise, for the TIVO to have deleted my programming. No one was watching it live. Nothing else needed space. There was no folder of "Recommendations". And now, this morning, it is recording another program without having to delete anything, so there is ample room.

Why did it delete my program, and how do I prevent it in the future?

P.S. I did look through some of the old posts, but the issue didn't seem to be resolved, and also doesn't really apply since there are no "recommendations" on my HD.

Next time, choose "Keep until I Delete", only sure way of knowing it will be there.

You said you're recording at 'Best' with a 'Save Until I Delete' option (aka KUID).

From what I've read on the forums - if you use KUID on a lot of recordings, it will start deleting shows that don't have that setting a lot 'earlier' to make room for upcoming KUID recordings - even if you think you have 'space' for them.

The takeaway is to only use KUID on rare occasions.

You didn't say what kind of tivo and how big is your hard disk. Also how do you get your signal; OTA, cable, cable with cable cards. It may be time to upgrade. The stock drive in a TivoHD isn't really big enough if you're using your tivo for a fair number of HD shows. Using TTG to archive shows to a PC is a workaround.

IF YOU HAVE A S3, TivoHD, HDXL
Digital stations (HD and SD) store the digital data as received, your basic quality setting isn't applied. Based on some posters I suspect tivo over-estimates the amount of space that might be required to record a SD digital show. It sounds like tivo might be "reserving" space assuming HD show. Tivo may be deleting shows, unnecessarily, thinking your new show will need more space then it does.

I know it's counter intuitive but save until I delete is rarely a good option. Tivo assumes you'll never delete any of those shows.

edited to say I'm not sure how often tivo does "housekeeping". It may be deleting shows based on what you have scheduled to record at some time in the future (24 hours?).
