I had a drive fail recently on an HDVR2. I happened to have a spare 250gb drive, so I figured I could take the drive from a different unit (same model) and copy that to the 250, pop it into this unit and I'm nearly done. I used the mfsbackup/mfsrestore/mfsadd method and booted up with the (expected) error 51 message. To get rid of this, I chose the clear and delete everything option as opposed to the kill51 hack script.

So now it wants to phone home. I am guessing that the don't call hack in my rc.sysinit.author file is the reason why the first phone call isn't going through.

My question is, if I let it make the call, will it then try to upgrade my software? I want to keep 6.2a since I have not had any compelling reason to go newer than that.

If you have fakecall in your rc.sysinit.author, it shouldn't be wanting to phone home. You may want to check out your fakecall script.

As for updating your software, it may download 6.4a over the phone. I wouldn't risk it. Just get the script working.

If I go into the phone menu it tells me DVR functions won't work unless it calls home. And the network submenu is gone.

Yea, you should have gone the 51killer route instead of C&DE. You may want to start over. :(

It's doubtful that it will download all the 6.4a slices on the first phone call. If you are going to reinstall the whole thing anyway, I would give the phone call a try first.

what I ended up doing was: mfsrestore to the new drive again, mounted it to change the IP address in the rc.sysinit.author file, then put it into the DTivo and used the kill51 script. Of course I then had some invalid season passes and stuff in the NPL to clean up, but that didn't take long.

For anyone who was wondering, the Clear and Delete everything doesn't make you lose hacks, but one important one that you do lose is having the networking in the phone menu.
