LOS ANGELES – Most contestants on "The Amazing Race" must tackle language barriers during their trek around the world. As the reality series' first-ever deaf contestant, Luke Adams had double the trouble. The 22-year-old recent college grad and his mother Margie are among the 11 two-person teams racing for the $1 million prize in the upcoming 14th season.
Sounds exciting. Can't wait, as usual.

Forget the deaf kid. Mike White is on one of the teams! That's some good potential for entertainment.

He's paired with his dad, who is the oldest contestant this season. Hopefully that doesn't prevent him from sticking around as long as possible. It will be very interesting to see how a TV/Movie writer views an unscripted reality show from the inside.

I thought that was Mike White in one of the promos, but I figured my eyes must be deceiving me. He's a fairly well known writer/actor, so that's an interesting choice.
The deaf contestant is also going to be interesting. Communication problems are already such a huge issue with cab drivers and locals, this will be an even bigger obstacle for that team. And what a burden on his mom to have to translate everything for him along the way. I think that could prove pretty frustrating pretty quickly.

Especially considering what he said in the quoted article, which is that he got frustrated with his mom when she'd have a 5 minute conversation with someone and then only take 30 seconds to fill him in on what was said.

The Amazing Race Asia beat them to the punch with a deaf contestant. They had a deaf man on the second season.

MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28873166/) has a slide show of all the teams on TAR 14.
Looks like the teams are a little more geographically dispersed than last season. Fewer people from Southern Cal anyway.

I doubt they'll do it in HD, but I wouldn't mind if they did.

Link to story in Columbia, SC The State newspaper regarding contestants from the area in the upcoming Amazing Race. Title of article is "Will 'Amazing Race' lead to another shot at Playboy for Midlands Tech student?"

That's not a very fitting picture to accompany that story. But thanks for posting.

It's Buck, from "Chuck & Buck". That movie is disturbing and entertaining all at the same time. :)

Will we need to add padding to the end of the recording for this Amazing Race season? Or is that only needed during football season? I'm not sure what kind of stuff CBS runs on Sundays during the football off-season.

CBS has golf for the next couple of months until the Masters, but I don't know if it ever causes overruns since I don't live in the East and never have to deal with that.

I usually check to see because they can air golf and/or NCAA basketball games (not necessarily the tournament but regular Sunday afternoon games).
I tend to take a look, see what they're airing, how much 'filler' they may have around an hour or so before 60 Minutes and decide then whether to pad or not. As for setting the SP, I set it for an extra 1/2 hour pad just in case I don't get to monitor it for some reason.

Golf you typically can tell early on (even the day before) if it will run over. Typically though golf is fine and you don't have to pad, but adding an extra half hour is always recommended for this show as JLucPicard stated, just in case.

There can never be a TAR thread without discussion of sports overruns or why it isn't in HD.

There can never be a TAR thread without discussion of sports overruns or why it isn't in HD.
If it aired on a night where it wasn't historically getting hosed every week due to sports overruns, that wouldn't need to be a part of the discussion. When the season threads start, there is always at least one person posting that they missed all or part of it due to an overrun.
I'm a little more with you on the HD discussion, but the reality is that more and more programming (especially on network TV) is being done in HD and people much more enjoy watching HD programming. I don't have a problem with the HD aspect of the discussion, though the bottom line is, they'll do HD when they do HD, but I certainly can't begrudge people discussing an HD broadcast possibility.
You could always start your own thread with "No sports overrun or HD discussion" in the title! ;)

Sure, it just gets tiring to hear the same things over and over and over.......

If the 3rd round doesn't get finished and has to get carried over to Sunday morning, that could be a possibility, but there's no way to know early on if the tournament is going to go into a playoff (as it did this last Sunday, which added about 45 minutes to the telecast).

Exactly. I would be happy with upconverted widescreen SD if they can't do HD at all.
Haven't HD camera gotten significantly smaller and cheaper lately?

Well, the fun begins tonight.
The golf tournament is scheduled until 6:30...maybe I'd better add an hour of padding while I'm still thinking about it!
Am I just not paying attention, or what? I have no idea who Mike White is. I get that he's a writer/producer and apparently actor, but I couldn't pick him out of a lineup.
Regular TAR thread contributors know I'm not really a fan of casting otherwise-famous people.
Mike and his father apparently take the "first gay Dad and son" team title.
Look, there are more cheerleaders! Didn't we just have Starr? Oh, and flight attendants! Did we mention they're attractive women?
But there are teams that look interesting.
The mom and deaf son should be very interesting to watch, and I bet they're not gonna see as many hurdles as some expect once they get a rhythm down.
Looks like we have an Ohio team this year - a husband and wife from Columbus.
And about this:
I think it would be cool for a TCF team to make it on the show!
wendiness and I have already put our hats in the ring, and have been kicking it around for a number of seasons now.
Of course, we'd have to audition first! That's mostly more my fault than it is hers. :D
