Two weeks running, my recording of Ski Sunday has failed, in a strange way.

The recording shows in Now Playing, and the details list it as a 45 min recording, but when you press play, there is only a blue TiVo background, and the bar showing where you are in the recording is 45 mins long, but with the green bit only about a minute long, then after a few seconds, it displays the end-of-program delete y/n options.

Everything else seems in order. Any ideas why this should happen?

What's the recording source?
Sounds like TiVo wanted to record but there was no signal to record from.

At the end of the recording TiVo changes the channel to the recording channel - never did work out why...

This may have bought your STB (if that's the source) back to life which is why everything looked ok to you afterwards.

Sorry, I'm not being clear enough. The source is my Pace Virgin Media box, but that is not where the problem is coming from. If the Pace box had crashed, I would have a 45 minute recording of a Virgin error message.

When you press play on TiVo, and the recording is not yet finished, the bar along the bottom shows where you are in the recording, and is green for the part already recorded, and blank for the still-to-be-recorded section. These two recordings were both finished, but pressing play shows a 45 minute bar with most of it blank.

Thanks for the reply, though.

this is one of the problems with tivo that was never resolved - most people seem to blame the set top box link - but I had this when I used to have Tivo recording regular analog TV from its own tuner. its just a bug...doesn't happen very often

I find it's usually due to a slightly loose SCART connection

I don't know if it is relevant, but my recording of the previous episode (BBC2SCO) turned out to be snooker, with SkiSunday starting in the last minute of the recording. I won't be at home until Friday to check Sun 25th's.

Is the season pass on the "right" channel e.g could it be set on BBC1 (on analogue RF) while you normally watch BBC1SE on cable Scart?

(No idea what channel it is on by the way BBC1 was just an example)

When it tried to record the season pass it will record from analogue where nothing is plugged in and hence not record anything.

Thanks for previous replies, now I can update that every time I have tried to record Ski Sunday on BBC2, Virgin box channel 102, it has failed. (4 or 5 times, season pass. Hmm, maybe I should cancel the SP and redo it?)

Last Sunday, I switched on TV 5 mins before, to check that all was OK, used the TiVo remote to change to 102, clicked OK to the "TiVo will change channel" dialogue that comes up. At the allotted time, TiVo changed channel (from 102 to 102, as I had already done it) to start recording, then immediately showed a blue screen saying it couldn't display live tv!

I used the TiVo remote channel down button to go to BBC1 (101), requiring a confirmation message that I would stop recording Ski Sunday, then immediately used channel up again, back to BBC2, and then pressing record, managed to get the recording I wanted.

This is so weird. My TiVo is otherwise ultra-relaible, and my Virgin box is pretty good, especially since I plugged it into a timer with a middle-of-the-night restart.

I had something like this a while back, and IIRC, it was because I had the "wrong" BBC2 selected in my channel line up. I can't remember how or why this happened, but it was I think, trying to record BBC2 from the aerial, which isn't plugged in these days, rather than via the Sky SCART feed, so I think I changed which 102 it was using, and that solved the problem.

Having said that, the program in question was Match of the Day 2, which was a years old Season Pass, and the fix *might* have been to double check the BBC2 on that, was the "correct" BBC2, for the one I was using.

One of those two fixes was the fix though! ;)

HTH!,

Matt :)

Another option would probably be to use the Virgin remote to change channel to BBC2 - this works with a Sky/Sky+ box when we get the blue screen.

At one stage we thought that it might have been the Sky radio channels causing issues - when they appeared as a "alternative" 101 etc. However, since the changes for radio channels to be 0101 etc we still get the occasional blue screen change.

Another potential problem is IR "noise". For example if you happened to be using the remote to change volume at the same time as your Tivo sends the channel change this might stop the channel change getting through.
In our case we also considerably reduced the number of failed changes by using a TVLink for Tivo control instead of the IR blasters, so that might be an option if you're not already doing that.
