I have my new TiVo HD-XL but haven't, yet, ordered the CableCards. Can I install and use the machine to record standard def (digital) from my cable supplier (Comcast if it matters)?
If yes, that true for advanced packages, like HBO?
Thanks....

Using basic cable and no cablecards you will be able to view/record all of the basic analog channels (usually 2-99). Add an antenna and you may also be able to watch/record the local HD channels.
In fact, you should do this before the cablecard appointment in order to have the TiVo connected and updated to the latest software. It will also permit you to become familiar with the operation of the TiVo before the installer arrives.

As jrm01 stated, you'll only be able to view/record the basics (2-99) and some HD if you have an antenna. If your Cable is like mine, the entire HBO package is digital so you wouldn't be able to watch it without cable cards.

Not only is HBO digital (in most cases) but it usually (probably always?) encrypted which would require the cablecards to view.

I use my HD for Over the air only. I'm in Oakland, Ca also.
If you are using or want to use digital cable, setup for the first time without cable cards, get updates to software v11.0, but be aware that v11.0 has a bug that hates cable cards on bootup.

What bug is this? When I restart my TiVoHD v 11 I don't have any issue with my cable cards?
